Thunderbird cannot send email with gmail since avast update
« on: March 08, 2013, 09:03:20 AM »
Since i updated avast i cannot send email using Thunderbird desktop program for PC and my gmail account.
In order to send a mail I need to shut down avast.

This is horrible.
I am getting the following error: Sending of message failed.
The message could not be sent using SMTP server smtp.googlemail.com for an unknown reason. Please verify that your SMTP server settings are correct and try again, or contact your network administrator.

I changed nothing apart from updating avast.

Also if i disable avast - then thunderbird time outs on connecting to my gmail account. - this only happens if i disable avast.

Really annoyed.

Hello,
check you Thunderbird account settings, they should be
pop.googlemail.com, port 995, security: SSL/TLS
smtp.googlemail.com, port 465, security: SSL/TLS

Thanks mikaelrask that seemed to solve my outgoing mail.

Pity this needs to be done manually and avast hasn't solved this before releasing the update.
I fear for all the people who are not very computer savy and are going to have problems since this update...This is a major blunder which should be solved ASAP for people who are unable to perform or even understand that this problem is related to avast.

A better explanation with pictures on how to solve this problem should be posted and pinned by avast.
I myself was on the verge of uninstalling avast from all my house hold computers and devices due to this.
Finding oneself unable to use my email was unacceptable.

@vojtech
smtp.googlemail.com, port 465, security: SSL/TLS - Is set.
But:
pop.googlemail.com, port 995, security: SSL/TLS - it sets to port 993 not 955.

Is there any where else i need to check/modify stuff apart from thunderbird? in Avast setting itself? Anything i should check for?

Port 995 is for POP over SSL/TLS, while 993 is for IMAP over SSL/TLS.

You should delete the accounts in the Mail shield settings, page SSL scanning.
