Problem with Thunderbird email
« on: March 09, 2013, 08:36:04 PM »
I had to "stop" all protection for Thunderbird email as Avast v8 will not allow incoming or outgoing email.  Is there something that I am doing wrong?

I'm assuming that you are using avast 8.0.1483 ?

What errors are you getting ?

Avast8 can now (by all accounts, excuse unintended pun) handle the SSL emails without having to modify your email settings in your email program.

If you previously had avast 7 you will have needed to change your email program, account settings to allow avast to scan SSL email, these changes need to be reversed, e.g set back to the SSL ports and Authentication.

Delete the entries for your email accounts in the avast Mail Shield > Settings > SSL Scanning.

Thank you, DavidR.  All that you suggested was done.  Nothing changes.  Still can't send/receive without disabling mail shield.  This is the message that comes up:
"Sending of message failed.
Please verify that your mail and newsgroups account settings are correct and try again."

You didn't confirm the avast version as that is crucial to the information given ?

Version 8.01.8043
Just downloaded this A.M. and updated all.
Perhaps Malwarebytes and/or ZoneAlarm Firewall is a problem?

I doubt it is MBAM, though on a program update your firewall may well block new components.

Ensure that ZA allows avastSvc.exe internet access, if it does, delete the entry for it and try collecting/sending email again.

Thanks for that because I found that my Zone Alarm has antivirus antimalware turned on.  I turned it off because I'm sure that it's not good to run two antivirus programs.  I really don't want to delete Avast, but I have the paid version of ZA and am not uninstalling that.  I will try running the two programs with ZA antivirus turned off.

No it isn't good as it can cause a conflict.

I don't know how the ZA AV (Anti-Virus) works or if just switching the AV element off will work completely as it may also be running an AV driver (that hooks files so that they are scanned.  This could be running even if disabled.

So it may require that you uninstall ZA and then do a custom install and uncheck the AV module.

I appreciate all of your help and the time that you spent on this.  Many thanks.  I have decided to run Avast without the Mail Shield turned on and so far, so good.  I guess it's the only way that I can have my cake and eat it too.
Again many thanks.

To DavidR
If it hadn't been for your help, I wouldn't have just checked Zone Alarm antivirus setting.  I just turned it off and turned on the Mail Shield.  I sent myself a test message and it worked just fine.  Thanks so much once again.  Good to have someone like you around for a tech unsavvy old granny like me.
