High CPU when downloading files
« on: March 10, 2013, 04:19:16 PM »
Avast! Free 8 is giving me high CPU usage when downloading something, no matter what program.

Right now I'm downloading something with Steam, and this is what Task Manager says.
http://prntscr.com/vrfqv

CPU usage is around 70/80% when downloading. My download speed is around 10 MB/s.

Once I pause my download/when it's finished, this is the top 5 of CPU usage:

CPU usage is back to 2%, or idle.

I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium with Avast! 8.0.1483, definitions ver. 130310-0.
My CPU is a dual-core Core i5 2450M @ 2.5GHz with 3.1 GHz turbo, with hyper threading.

I have the Web Shield enabled, with Normal sensitivity, and code emulation enabled.

This issue is annoying, because I use my laptop on my, well, lap a lot and it runs very hot when downloading, sometimes to the point that it's too hot to use on my lap.

Some more screenshots of things happening:

Hope this is enough info.

You get high CPU usage because avast! scans by default the whole files which you download.
 ;)

Yeah, I got that, lol :P

Is there a way to limit the CPU usage though, while still having it scan the things downloaded?
Thanks :)

Yes, if you don't play games, watch videos, listen music, surfing, etc. when you download.
;) Also, open the avast! GUI-> security-> antivirus->web shield->settings and check "use intelligent stream scanning" if it's not checked. And in the packers tab you can select self extracting DOS, Self extracting win32, droppers, 7zip, rar and zip and installer and unselect the other.
