Avast 8 Free interfering with CD/DVD burning
« on: July 03, 2013, 07:23:47 AM »
Hi all,

I'm running Avast Free 8.0.1489 on 64-bit Win7 Home Premium SP1.  The problem I'm having is that Avast appears to be interfering with burning CDs and DVDs.  With Avast enabled, my burning software - I have PowerISO, ImgBurn and InfraRecorder - reports that blank discs are not empty and refuses to write to them.  Disable Avast and burning/verifying succeeds with the same blank disc, and the resulting disc is playable in other machines.

The problem is repeatable: it occurs on both my desktop and laptop.  I've tried disabling the Filesystem shield only, but that isn't sufficient.  I'm not sure exactly what shield or setting is responsible ... for the time being I am just disabling all shields when I need to burn a disc.

I don't know when exactly this problem started because I haven't burned any discs for many months - I probably was still using Avast 7 the last time.

I did have problems upgrading both machines to 1489 from the previous release (1481?).  The online upgrade resulted in both computers running like molasses in winter.  I had to completely uninstall Avast, download the 1489 installer and install it as if new.  Since then everything has been fine until this DVD problem occurred.

Thanks for any suggestions,
George

I burn DVD'd and CD's all the time with no problems using Avast. You can add your burning software to Avast's global exclusions in settings. Doesn't sound like an Avast issue. Does the Avast logs show anything?

Nero products are extremely bloated. Burnaware Free is great along with ImgBurn. Did you remove your previous antivirus COMPLETELY before installing Avast? Most new laptops or desktops come preinstalled with either McAfee or Norton. Also you can exclude your cd drive from being scanned with Avast (not recommended). I have Avast and burn movies, music cd's and ISO images with no problems what so ever. I highly doubt its Avast causing the issue. What exactly are you trying to burn? You also might want to check for updated firmware to your cd rom drive via your manufacture web site. Also I have had several cd's and dvd's that are blank, brand new but yet defective.

Hi,

The logs don't show anything.  I had no problems burning with Avast 7 Free ... I don't recall whether I've burned anything prior to this since upgrading to 8.  As for it being an Avast problem: clearly something is going on because the burn programs claim blank discs are used (and so won't write on them) only when Avast is running.  I'll try excluding the programs and see what happens.

Thanks,
George
