gears.dll remove ? Secunia Flagged it
« on: March 15, 2013, 11:04:09 AM »
Secunia is a free program inspector and advises when a program has new updates available.
Secunia has flagged " gears.dll "  located in avast's safezone folder as being " end of life "
( no longer supported by avast )..

This occurred before I updated to Avast Pro 8 AV.
I was hopeful that updating to Avast Pro 8 AV would rectify this issue, but it did not.

Is there any one from the Avast Tech Support Team that can explain why it is no longer supported ?
Is it no longer needed ?

I assume it is used with the safezone browser, a simple version of google chrome. Google Gears ?

Please shed some light on this issue, as I am sure there are many other users who are looking
for an answer to this recent issue.

Should it simply be ignored by Secunia or should it be deleted to prevent malicious use ?

I and many other users await your timely response.

Windows XP SP 3
Secunia PSI 2.0 ( Personal Software Inspector )
Avast Pro Antivirus 8.0.1483 ( Virus Definitions Version 130314-2 )

The SafeZone browser is based on Chromium, not Goggle Chrome.  IOW, both have the same roots similar to Firefox and Pale Moon being derived from the same source.

I'm running Secunia PSI 2.0.3003 and it doesn't flag gears.dll on my installs of AIS.

i7-3610QM 2.3GHZ, 8.0GB Ram,  Nvidia GeForce GT 630M 2GB, Win7 Pro SP1 64bit, IE 11
Common to both: Avast Premium Security 19.7.2388, WinPatrol Plus, SpywareBlaster 5.5, Opera 12.18, Firefox 68.0.2, MBam Free, CCleaner

The fact remains this brand-new Avast! 8 comes with a gears.dll from 2009.
That's 4 years ago.

One would think they atleast used the latest version of it but that's not the case.
(Do a Google if need be if you like it.)

Also no answer of yet how to remove it as I asked it already in another thread (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=117928.0).
The Secunia PSI I use is the 3.0.6005.

When installing Avast! be sure to use the custom install... never the default!

The version of PSI shouldn't matter, as all versions use the same database.  Benny G is using PSI 2 according to his signature.

Gears.dll is/was a part of Google Gears, which is no longer offered.  On my WinXP machine, there has never been a version of Google Chrome nor Google Gears installed.  On my Win7 machine, Google Chrome was installed when I bought it, but was never used and promptly removed on the day this laptop was delivered.

I've figured out why PSI isn't listing gears.dll as out of date.  It's because gears.dll does not exist on either of my machines.  I set Explorer to show all hidden files and folders, and then did a complete search of the hard drive.  I don't know why it is installed in your Avast SafeZone folder at all.  I am running AIS 8.0.1483.
