Update to version 7.0.1483 re-boot fails
« on: March 18, 2013, 03:22:22 PM »
Hi, I am, until now, a happy user of Avast Free anti-virus.  However, a few days ago I began to get the prompt to update to version 7.0.1483.  However, each time I try to do this I am propmted to re-boot and when I do my PC locks up at the beginning of the re-boot and the re-boot fails.  I have to switch of the power, boot up in safe mode and then do system restore to the point before I tried to update.  As I say, until now I have been really happy with avast, but if I can not solve this will have to look at some alternative as avast is now not updating at all.

I am a Windows Vista user and also have Spybot and Malwarebytes on my computer.

I'd be grateful for any advice as I am a reformed luddite and definitely not a techie.

Thanks, Mcthug.   :)

Many people are having the same or similar issue after recently updating. Avast has not responded to anything yet as far as I can tell. I'm in the same boat as you, only with Windows XP. Right after updating I had to cycle power because windows wouldn't boot up. After that, it's been a nightmare for 5 days.

See: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=118145.0

And the Topic I posted: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=118373.0

Good luck

I updated my test PC last night - unfortunately I didn't notice what it SAID it wanted to update to. However it actually updated to 8.0.1483

I plan to update my 'real' PC shortly which, like you is asking to update to 7.0.1483 I'll report back when I do.

However, that said - In your position I would make a fresh restore point, then backup my PC, then download the latest Avast and then unplug it from the internet and uninstall Avast and then reboot and install the one I just downloaded. Once installed OK reconnect to the internet and allow it to update or force an update via the maintenance screen.

I always find that when there is a major version change you will sometimes need to do a clean install

Download a fresh copy to your desktop
http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe

Download AswClear
http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/aswclear.exe

Uninstall Avast via control panel
Run aswClear
Install Avast

I had the same issue (including a Vista machine but no other virus/malware tool) and used the same route to resolution. I then did a clean uninstall with the removal tool and a fresh instal of Avast 8. Same thing happened (hang on reboot). So I did the removal thing again and did a fresh install of the old version 7. Life is good.

I just hit the Avast!!!!!! pro setup shortcut on my desktop. I placed this on my desk top when I originally installed Avast!!!Pro. The clean uninstall app did not erase the desktop shortcut. The command is below. Paste this in your browser address bar and see what happens. I also ran CCleaner64 to clean up the loose ends in the registry.

setup_av_pro.exe

Ccleaner isn't designed to remove avast! or any other AV program.  Use the right tool for the right job. :)

As far as I can tell the prompt is lying, there is no 7.0.1483 ... it's actually 8.0.1483, the latest version available. So don't update until they fix these reboot problems on XP/Vista machines.

This is most likely a typo by the person who started the thread.

OS's used: Windows 10 Pro (x64) 1607 <-> Windows 7 Ult (x64) <-> Windows 8.1 Ult (x64) <-> Windows 2012 Essentials R2 (x64)
Avast Internet Security (sub for 10 PC's), HPM.Alert, Malwarebytes, Asus-x99 Deluxe/U3.1 (Intel Core i7 X980 EE - 64Gb Ram - NVidia Geforce x980 - Samsung PCI-e 950Pro 512 SSD), Microsoft Surface Pro 4 (6th Gen Intel Core i7 CPU - 16Gb Ram - 512 SSD)
When installing Avast! be sure to use the custom install... never the default!

Are you suggesting we're all blind and stupid?. There are multiple threads about this anomoly of the upgrade notifier showing version 7.0. 1483 NOT Version 8.0 1483 for XP and Vista users. This is what is causing half the problems mate.

The notifier is the same for all versions. Highly doubt it discriminates or is selective.

Care to post a link to some of those multiple threads please.  :)
