Check the detailed information on both devices and see when the last communication was ?

It may not be communicating so after a time it would probably assume the status is OFF.

That would explain it.  Thanks!  The XP system is a desktop used 4-5 times a month and the other is laptop that does TVRD (Television Recliner Duty) for a couple to three hours in the evening.  I'll check my account the next time it's up for a while.

My primary 24/7 desktop uses BullGuard AV so I don't have a system running Avast full time.  Yet.  I won't be renewing that license; my opinions of BG's corporate policies are not suitable for posting in a public forum.

Cheers.

The page displays "Security Status: OFF" everytimes when the corresponding computer did not contact the page for longer than the defined time.

You can change the time (default is 1 day: "1d") by clicking on your system to see details;  next clicking on the blue "Edit" link. Find further explanations with mouse over the blue button "(i)", see picture.   8)

@jrace - Thank you!

Both systems' last communication were several days ago.  The term "offline after" is about as clear as mud and it wasn't until I set both at values higher than the last communication did the status shift immediately to Secured.

I would consider this thread closed if the following question is answered:
I someones systems were to remain at Security Status: OFF should they care?

Well it rather depends on the point of the my.avast.com account page if you are going to use it then you would want to know what the Status is of your systems. But it should be investigated as if it is really off then there may be a problem.

It is obviously much greater benefit for people that have multiple systems and may be away on occasion or are keeping an eye on other system, parents, children, etc.
