No idea - sorry

Assuming they are custom scans I would be tempted to just delete them.

Wow thats weird! What does it say when you click one More Details??
Do you still have the default scans? (Quick Scan, Full System Scan, etc)
You might have an infection if you didn't do this or there could be something wrong with avast! Im no computer expert so Im probably wrong somehow...

All the normal scans are still there.

These scans look like they are the creation of an incomplete custom scan. For some reason these are being created without my doing so.

This is the second time these have appeared and I have deleted these each time.

Hmm, so they keep coming back without you doing anything??
Have you run a Full Scan with Avast?! Try putting a password on Avast, I've never done this though so I dont know if this will help... (Settings -> Password)

<snip>

When you installed over the top or updated, did you have any previous custom scans ?
That may have been what it is with the name changed to ????

What is in the settings of these ???? scans ?
You could try renaming them and subsequently deleting the renamed scans.

I've one of these too. It came after I upgraded avast 7 to 8.0.1482. I had/have 1 custom scan, this new "???? scan" did not replace it. Deleted it once, and now I see that it has come back. I'm not worried about it, it does not affect me using the program.. still it's a bug in avast (upgrade process most likely) and should be fixed.

David,
I performed a clean install prior to this. I don't create any custom scans. I almost believe it happened after a screensaver scan.

Shakara,
Do you have a screensaver scan enabled?

Thanks

Can you please upload your avast5.ini to our FTP?
I don't suppose it reveals anything (or rather, how it happened), but it's worth trying...
Thanks.

OK, I sent it. Zipped and named Charyb. It does look like there are 3 extra scans at the end with the same label as the screensaver scan (task 9, 10, 11). Strange, I don't understand what is causing this.

Thanks

Ok, now I got a second ???? Scan like the original poster has.

And this happened right after I updated avast .1482 -> .1483. So my initial hunch of this being an update/upgrade bug was strong.

If this were a bug across the board, then wouldn't everyone have it and the forum would be alight with it.

So it isn't quite so clear cut or easy to define why it has happened.

2 times after an update of the program this odd scan has spawned itself, I've not succeeded to repeat this problem any other way, so in light of the evidence, it's hard to dispute that this is definitely related to avast update/upgrade.
