You can terminate it by clicking the terminate button in WinXP. (please terminate it, don't just pause)

In win9x you must disable the HTTP proxy in Internet Explorer to fully switch off any avast's process from the download stream.

I believe your problems will disappear with the latest update (soon to be available officialy). If you can test it now, please follow the link I have posted before.

Lukor,

In the XP environment, we stopped the Webshield and made sure that ashwebsv.exe was no longer showing in the task manager.

We ran the test stream...it ran for about 30 minutes...seemed to do fine...after about 30 minutes...we started seeing some fluctuations...eventually we get a message in the Media Player that the network is too busy to play file at the original speed.

I had been getting this after about 15-20 mins...so...it at least went longer.

Is there anything else I need to turn off?  Not knowing all about Avast and how it works, it makes it hard for me to know what to stop, pause, or terminate.  I may try uninstalling Avast completely from the Win98 machine and seeing how this stream works there.    I also run AdSubtract Pro...I know it uses a local proxy setting.  Is there anyway that this could be creating "network congestion" in conjuction with how Avast scans?  At this point, I hate to uninstall it from my main XP machine.

It surely is strange.

This is exactly right. You can not stop WebShield more that this. The Network shield works a little differently and can hardly cause these troubles - and as I said before, it is not available on Win98, so that's ruling it out too. No other avast component is monitoring the download stream when WebShield is stopped.

Every proxy server in the download stream may potentially interfere with the download. Please look into the Option menu in Windows Media Player, under Network tab you can setup if WMP10 is using the proxy server from Internet Explorer browser or not (the button: Configure), choose: Do not use proxy server - and that would sort out AdSubtract too.

Did you test the stream that I posted?
There isn't anything wrong with the straem as I mentioned in my previous post.
My computer is slower than your 1700 Mhz and I have no problems receiving crystal
clear uninterrupted music from 91.3 but, I don't use WMP.

Hi Lukor,

I'm also a new Avast! user.
So far, I really like it because it doesn't slow down my computer like AVG or even worse, Norton.

Unfortunately, I cannot seem to be able to download large files on www.download.com like I used to (small files download but bigger files either start downloading and stop at +/- 5% of the download or the download will not start at all. After a few minutes, it times out and gives the following error message: (title of window: Download error) The_file_attempted_to_download could not be saved, because the source file could not be read. Try again later, or contact the server administrator.
The file I attempted to download is: http://dw.com.com/redir?edId=3&siteId=4&oId=3000-2652_4-10710658&ontId=2652_4&lop=link&tag=tdw_dltext&ltype=dl_dlnow&pid=10710658&mfgId=64748&merId=64748&destUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.download.com%2F3001-2652_4-10710658.html
Tried 3 different big ones. Only the small ones did download properly.
With this one for instance, I had no problem: http://dw.com.com/redir?edId=3&siteId=4&oId=3000-2079_4-10534306&ontId=2079_4&lop=link&tag=tdw_dltext&ltype=dl_dlnow&pid=10534306&mfgId=6282967&merId=6282967&destUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.download.com%2F3001-2079_4-10534306.html

As for Shoutcast, either it buffers to +/-45% and then stalls or else it will buffer all the way to 100%, plays for 5 seconds then stalls. At the bottom of Winamp it says: [BUFFER: 0%] Song_name

Here's an example of a Shoutcast link that doesn't work (none of those that I tried work):
http://scfire-ntc0l-2.stream.aol.com:80/stream/1040

However, a previous poster indicated he had problem with the following feed at one point. I tried it and I'm still listening to it right now. Works fine. I'm glad to have found the KNCT station. Great muzak. I truly enjoy it.
Plays well in WMediaPlayer AND in Shoutcast with no problem.
http://tuner1.dc1.sonixtream.com/playlists/knct/knctKNCT.asx

Steps I took to resolve the issue:
Deinstalled Avast! and reinstalled it after rebooting.

Avast Home 4.7.1029
Extreme toolkit Ver 1.9.4.0
ZoneAlarm Pro 5.0.590.0.15
OS: XP Home SP2
layer: WinAmp ver 5.35 (x86) & Windows Media Player 10.00.00.4036

Previous Anti virus: AVG avg75f_476a1043 (deinstalled normally (NOT deinstalled in safe mode))
Browsers: Firefox 2.0.0.5 & Internet Explorer 7.0.5730.11

Please let me know what I should do. Thanks in advance.

Pete.

Hello,

does the problem persists even when you terminate WebShield (or perhaps all avast! providers)  - or not ?

It is somewhat confusing to place this issue into the 2 years old thread - we have done many improvements in WebShield since that time (at least I hope  :P )

Yes Lukor, thanks for your reply.
It does persist if I turn off one or all providers. Even if I disable all Avast protections.

I ended up removing Avast all together and reverted back to my previous solution.
In the meanwhile, lost all internet connectivity after removing Avast (I guess a worm had gotten a hold of my machine).
Ran a Spybot Search and destroy, WinsockXPfix and after a few hours of research, got my internet back on.

Now with Norton, everything works good again, or so it seems.
I'm really behind on a lot of projects so now is not the time for me to try new solutions but I would be so happy to say bye bye to Norton once and for all when this version expires.

If you guys had a one stop solution for 15$ or so per year, I would be going with you no questions asked then.

The only thing I could think is that I didn't deinstall AVG via the safe mode. It might have left some remnants when Avast was installed?

Feel free to ask me any question. I would love to help you guys get a comparable solution to NAV up and running in the next years to come.

Good luck with all your projects,

Pete.

I think you have mentioned the magic word Norton if that was on your system previously, I know you mentioned AVG but if NAV was there as well; it can be an absolute pig to remove, even after add remove programs there can be remnants that conflict with all sorts of things.

This forum is littered with the debris left behind after a Norton uninstall. It really gets its hooks into everything.

A link worth looking at, which is a program removal tool that can remove the remnants of a number of different Norton Programs:

Well, it was not really because since then I reformated the system using the HP recovery CDs.
HOWEVER, I have numerous OTHER Norton products installed on my system. ie: Partition Magic, Norton Ghost, pcAnywhere, etc... but NO I didn't have Norton Internet Security installed (or previously installed after reformating) on my system right before trying to install Avast!

Only AVG.
