Since I upgraded to Avast 8 free each time I connect to the internet Avast keeps updating itself, as usual, but now it`s constantly huge updates
in around 20 to 40 MB. What is this all about?

The size of the vps updates depends upon what type and number of viruses/malware circulating at the time.
There is no set size as it varies day to day or even hour to hour. It's just avast covering your backside.
