outgoing server changes to loopback
« on: March 08, 2005, 01:21:41 PM »
hi, I use Mozilla 1.7 for web and Email, and today it started changing my outgoing mail server to 127.0.0.1 and outgoing mail fails to send until I change the outgoing server back to normal. I am no IT guru but I have a grasp of what the loopback address is, I have really tried to understand what is happening, but I don't get it. Avast uses loopback to check Emails, OK, but why does the server setting change and stay changed? Also my username got changed at one point from user@email.com to user#email.com. I have run the Email protection wizard, but I have not shut down and restarted yet (I am waiting for a big Email to send). could someone explain if this is normal - and if it is, why did it just start today.

I have been using Avast and Mozilla together for about a year and never had any problems at all (Avast is my first choice, it works better than any of the other free virus software - and I can't afford to buy, so good on you Alwil for giving it to broke people like me!!)

please help me!

You left out a important piece of information.
What OS?

Avast need to change things in the mail settings in order to be able to scan the mail.
This is explained in the help file.

Hi, I still have Win98 SE, I tried the help, but I just don't understand. The computer was on and idle all night, not connected to the net, and when I tried to check my email this morning the username had changed to user#server.mail#server.com where "user" is my username, "server" is my ISP's name and "mail" is mail, my normal username is user@server.com and my normal mail server is mail.server.com, although this time the outgoing server had not changed. I am tearing my hair out I don't know what to do, I am not convinced it is an Avast thing, does anyone think it could be a virus or similar. I will try using Hijack This, I have never heard of it, but you all seem to mention it alot.

thanks

Cobelloy,
With Win98 SE you should have:

pop3 server= smtp server = 127.0.0.1
username = mail.server.coml#user or mail.server.com#user@server.com
smtp authentication enabled and the username there = mail.server.coml#user or mail.server.com#user@server.com

Hope this help.

hi again,
I typed in exactly what you posted into my settings but no mail will send, it asks for my password, I type it in and OK then same again over and over. I couldn't find any SMTP authentication tab, but I found one for "enable secure authentication" and I tried with this checked and unchecked - no difference.

the only way mail will send is with POP and SMTP set to use mail.server.com and my username as my email address (user@server.com)

but this resets every time mozilla is turned off to 127.0.0.1 and user@server.com#mail.server.com - I may have typed that in wrong in my last post. The other thing I noticed this time is that in the advanced settings (Mozilla) the only outgoing server is set to 127.0.0.1 (why it resets every time) but I am sure the last time I had webmail and I added a second server, the first and only one then was my ISP mail server - mail.server.com

I am going to uninstall Avast, delete my mail account, reinstall Avast, add my account again and hopefully that will fix this problem.

please post me any other info that I have overlooked
many thanks xxXXxx

If you do it in the sequnce you said, don't forget to run the mail protection wizzard after you have setup the mail account.
