Can't register or insert license?

I'm unable to register THROUGH THE PROGRAM,so I sent for an email  key but all that does is ask for a file ,when all I was sent was just some letters to copy and paste.

WTH is going on?

I've uninstalled and reinstalled 3 times now.............I've never had any problems before

Thx,I figured it out.............I hadn't scrolled far enough down to get the offline registration box.  :)

I haven't figured the registration part out for Avast Free v8.xx either.  I've had Avast Free for years, on my own and my wife's computers.  Each year I simply updated the registration to renew the Free version.  Now I can't do that on either computer.  Both will expire in about three weeks, and where do I go from there?  Version 7.xx and going all the way back to Version 4 didn't have this issue.   How the hell do you register Version 8?   :(

Also, what does "connected devices" mean?  My wife's computer shows five "connected devices" in the Avast screen, but they are all the same --  five identical copies of her desktop box account.  I deleted them all and it makes no difference.  My own computer shows zero connected devices. Again it seems to make no difference.  An explanation of what constitutes "connected devices" and how they are connected would be helpful as well.
