My avast! "downgraded"...?
« on: March 27, 2013, 02:33:27 PM »
Okay, so, I did a system restore again, but this time I remembered to disable the self-defense module. Everything is fine and dandy, but then I noticed my avast! downgraded itself to Ver. 7. I've had 8 for at least a month or so? I restored to yesterday's point. It was Ver. 8. Then it asked me to restart, so I did, and now it's back at Ver. 7. I did Program Update and it says I have the latest version.

What's going on...?

EDIT: Yeah, I know, I seem to have bad luck with Avast and System Restore, huh...

I have long since given up on system restore, as it really isn't that reliable and often has unexpected results.

I replaced it completely with hard drive imaging software, I do a weekly backup image of my hard drive partitions. That gives an exact copy of the partition, unlike system restore which isn't a full backup and doesn't cater for all files, etc.

I see. Well, is there anything I can do to get Ver. 8 back without having to completely uninstall Ver. 7?

Given the issues with system restore and the unexpected reversion to avast 7 I would say that a clean reinstall is the option I would go for.

You didn't say what avast version you are using, free/pro/ais, these instructions are for the free version download:
- Download the latest version of avast, 8.0.1483 http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again (if you didn't save your last download). Use that when you reinstall.

- Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, aswClear.exe find it here and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for all versions).
  • 1. Now uninstall avast! - using add remove programs, if you can't do that start from the next step, reboot.
  • 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility, it will request it be run from safe mode (and will handle the boot into safe mode), first for 7.x if previously installed and then for 8.0, once complete reboot into normal mode.
  • 3. install the latest version, reboot.
