Avast8 Thunderbird alert, not running
« on: March 27, 2013, 09:21:41 PM »
Today I switched from AVG to Avast8 Free and now I find that Thunderbird 17.0.4 is will not function.
I am running Windows Vista 64-bit.

I get this message when I start Thunderbird:
Could not initialize the application's security component. The most likely cause is problems with files in your application's profile directory. Please check that this directory has no read/write restrictions and your hard disk is not full or close to full. It is recommended that you exit the application and fix the problem. If you continue to use this session, you might see incorrect application behaviour when accessing security features.

I can say "ok", but then none of the accounts can send/receive.

I have followed the instructions here for export and import of certificates. http://www.avast.com/faq.php?article=AVKB91#artTitle
But when I get to the import part in Thunderbird, I find the file and say Open, but then nothing happens.  No prompt for Downloading Certificate.  It just goes back to the certificate screen, which has no certificates.

I am stuck here. I run 2 gmail accounts, and a couple of others on Thunderbird.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

did you uninstall AVG before installing avast?
did you run AVG removal tool to clear any leftover files that may conflict?

tools, run and reboot      http://singularlabs.com/uninstallers/security-software/

any change?

Yes, I did uninstall AVG before installing Avast.  I wasn't aware of the AVG removal tool.  I'll give that a try and report back.

Since yesterday, I have now tried twice to do a system restore to the point when I uninstalled AVG (the furthest back restore point that was available) but it said it encountered an error during the process.

Thanks for the link-- going there now.

Well, I ran the removal tools for both AVG and Avast.  Used the Avast 6 tool, although I had Avast 8, but there was not one for Avast 8 listed.
Still no effect on Thunderbird, not functional.

I think it is something to do with the Certificates- I have none.  Is there a way to recover them or get new ones?  Or maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree, I don't know.

Working on making a backup of all my Mozilla files using MozBackup, and I guess going to try uninstalling and reinstalling Thunderbird.  But I'd really rather not go through that...
Thanks for any other suggestions!

Since last post, I installed Microsoft Security Essentials, uninstalled Thunderbird, deleted the Thunderbird roaming profile files that were used since the AVG uninstall (not my mail file, but preferences and such) and reinstalled Thunderbird.  Then restored everything except Mail and Certificates using MozBackup.  It reads my original mail file, and apparently my Certificates got repopulated,  thanks to the other preferences?  I still don't know how that works really, but I DO have items in the Authorities and Servers tabs now, and I didn't before.

Now it is all working!! :-D
