I don't know if this would be of any help or not but have you tried a download manager for downloading large files?  When I had dial up I would use one to download my files and it was a great help (just don't recall which one I used).

There are (or at least use to be) a few free ones out there and some of them would support / have a resume feature as well.

You can do a search for download managers (or Free Download Manager) and find many different links for this type of software.

Good point Injr, I should have mentioned this as well. I use FreeDownloadManager: http://www.freedownloadmanager.org/download.htm which is completely FREE that I've found works really well, the great part about using a download manager like this is that even if the connection is interrupted (like a connection time-out) most downloads can be restarted where the download left off so that no time is lost and the download can be completed with no problem as far as download time related to file size since the download continues at the point of the interrupt. I use the FDM Lite version of FreeDownloadMangaer which is only about 3.8MB in size since I don't need the full blown FreeDownloadManager application (you probably won't either).

This would solve your problem atryeu, also you've mentioned you still have "call waiting".  If that's true then as long as you didn't mind paying for the software up front for around $29.95, NetWaiting would solve your problem as far as getting calls while on line since "call waiting" is all that application really needs (I pretty certain "Caller ID" is totally optional, all you'll know is when a incoming call arrives in case your expecting something important and not who the caller is (I only us the application in these situations myself when an important call is expected and I pause the Internet connection to see who it is and if it's not the important call I'm expecting I ask them to call back in order to get back to the paused Internet connection within 6 minutes).

So atryeu, the FREE download manager should resolve most of your disconnect issues during large file downloads (a few downloads are not compatible with the "interrupt", the download manager will tell you in advance if this feature will work with the download file your using at the time).

The two features that will help you out using FreeDownloadManager are:

Download acceleration:
Free Download Manager splits files into several sections and downloads them simultaneously, allowing you to use any type of connection at the maximum available speed.

Resuming broken downloads:
When the downloading process is interrupted, you needn't start from the beginning again. Free Download Manager can resume broken download from where it was interrupted.

And perhaps NetWaiting will help out if you use the Internet a lot and need to know about incoming calls during this time.

I do actually use Download Managers. I have the FDM one but don't like it very well. I've used GetRight for years actually. LoL I have the trial version of it and I just put up with the annoying alerts that's it's a trial. It doesn't allow downloads from SSL but otherwise the trial is okay.  I can use it for a lot of things, but not for the things I really need it for    I work with 3d programs (www.daz3d.com  if you've never heard of it) and for a few years I was buying some content (or getting freebies) to create my digital art with. In the last 2 years or so, the files started going up over 100mb (the largest I know of so far is around 450mb). Even though I can use the download manager to start the download, they can't be resumed, so a Download Manager really doesn't do me any good I've had to have a couple friends send me things through the mail or upload to a private folder on their site where I can use the manager.

I looked at the NetWaiting link you provided as well....  It wouldn't work either way... the modem I have doesn't support VoiP Thank you though, it was a nice try!

sorry that I couldn't be of any help to you.  I don't know if you have tried contacting avast or not but perhaps they would be kind enough to send you a disc with the software on it (or maybe you know of someone who has a high speed internet connection and could download the software for you and put it onto a flash drive or disc and you could install it that way.

Hopefully you will be able to get this issue resolved.

You could always use your public library. Download from one of their computers and burn it to a USB.

Thanks guys, it was nice of you to help     I do have the update for Avast. I downloaded from FileHippo.com  where I can use the download manager. I had to downgrade to 7 though because Software Updater (which I did not install to begin with.. I went through Custom and removed that option) was downloading random programs still without permission and it was preventing me from doing anything online I did contact support about that and after a big issue where they didn't want to read that I did "not" have it installed, they finally realized what I was writing and said they will pass it on to the programmers to figure out why it's downloading when it's not installed.  Until then, I'm stuck with 7 still.

My downloading problem though is with files that I can't use my download manager on that are too big for my connection   I don't know anybody local to ask for help. The library sadly is almost 40 minutes away (town alone is over 20 miles away LoL) and I'm stuck here without transportation so I couldnt' get over there often. It was my one option for awhile, but some people were abusing the computers apparently and they setup a more strict time system that is much shorter (30 minutes) and the download speed isn't fast enough to manage some of the larger downloads I get stuck needing to grab.

If I had some money I would invest in a cheap laptop and either use the wifi in town or get one of those little mobile modems to get what I can on my trips to town. Without transportation I lack a means to find a job though All my work is done on the slow nasty dialup and I don't hardly earn anything *sigh*

Thanks again though everybody, I do appreciate it. I'm just stuck with the current situation until either somebody helps me learn to drive (I have a car, just no license lol) or the town sets something up for us out here in the country (both which are very unlikely at this point *cries*).
