Connection Lost Error
« on: January 13, 2006, 09:29:29 AM »
I keep getting a message box that my connection has timed out, and do I want to continue waiting...

But I am connected... I just got the message as I was logging in here...

And I'm (seemingly) getting all my email as well.

How can I determine what is causing this message and fix it?

Regards,
Chuck Billow

Can you provide full details of the message or a screen shot of the timeout message.

What is your OS and what is your email program?
What exactly were you doing when you got the message?

There are ways to avoid the message but first we need to know it is mot something that shouldn't be trying to connect.

David:

You're right, I need to provide more info...

The next time it occurs, I'll grab a screen shot...

OK this looks like a timeout whilst you were collecting your email using MS Outlook, is that correct? - If so you can extend the timeout delay from within Outlook, sorry I'm not an Outlook user (OE) so I'm not familiar how to do this in outlook. You may also need to extend the delay in avast also (but probably not), this can be done in the avast Outlook/Exchange plug-in, Customize, Advanced Tab.

This can happen if you have either a lot of email or some with large attachments, they need to be scanned and occasionaly the time taken to do that exceeds the timeout delay.

David:

I looked in the Outlook settings (I think, but saw nada to set -- attached)

I don't think it's actually Outlook, 'cause I'm on cable and "permanently online".

The Outlook timeout settings within Outlook.

OE example, there may be something similar in Outlook to adjust the timeout delay.

Your right, I did warn you I don't use Outlook ;D. I just checked there doesn't appear to be a means of increasing the timeout in the avast plug-in for Outlook. Probably because it is a plug-in integrated into Outlook, so you only have theoption of increasing the MS Outlook timeout delay (assuming it has one) or temp disable outbound email scan when sending large attachments.

It doesn't matter if you are permanently connected, it is the period of inactivity between Outlook and the email server whilst the attachment is scanned that triggers the timeout.

I found it.  It's not on the Outlook tab, but on the Internet Mail tab

Thanks,
Chuck

Yes it's there, but I wasn't sure if this applies to you using MS Outlook and this, the Internet mail provider is for use for non-Outlook/Exchange email programs.

If it worked great, usually the first timeout warning is from your email program and then avast, if you extend the email program beyond the avast timeout.

Were you able to adjust the timeout settings from within MS Outlook?

Yes, as the same as into OE.
Tools > email accounts > email (show or modify email accounts) > Change > More settings > Advanced tab  :)

David:

Didn't have to touch Outlook, since it's set to "Always On"... and all the time I was getting that message, I was still sending and receiving mail, so thar you go!
