same problem here. Sorry, i am not willing to follow these mentioned instructions. Avast has to offer an update (for all regular Joes).

Just did after months a new try with windows 8, because the desktop is good.
Avast seems stable sofar.

EXCEPT....................

I need to disable ssl scanning in avast to get thunderbird working.
And this is a compleet clean installed windows 8 system just a few hours up.
WIndows7 pro 64bit. EN     previous: Windows 8 Pro EN 64bit upgrade version (clean installed on empty disk) but windows 8 is terrible.
