Connection time out
« on: March 16, 2005, 11:19:18 PM »
HI, I have installed avast home edition 4.6  on a friend's computer.  I personnaly use avast  on my 3 home computers.  On his computer he gets an error message:   connection time out  : internet connection  time out has expired.  COntinue to wait  choices are  yes or no.   Why does he get this message?  And what does it means?

Thank you

What OS is he using?
What email program?

Under what circumstances does it occur, sending email (with or without attachments, etc.), receiving email?

avast's Internet Mail provider should scan incoming and outgoing email, this may slightly slow the sending of email, especially if there is an attachment, your email program sees this delay and thinks there is a lack of response from the email server (sometimes it can be a slow/poor connection). Probably the easiest way is to sort this is to increase the delay before you get the message.

In OE, my delay is set to 1 minute, you could set it to say 2 minutes.

This error is usually associated with your email program (which we still haven't confirmed).

It would also be unusual to get it if no mail activity is going on, is there an auto (timed) check for email being done without his intervention?

However, since you have said he is using office 2002, he may even be using MS Outlook?

Can he send or receive email at all, without these messages (must importantly we need to know his email program)?

Does he have a firewall (if so what one) and does it allow ashMaiSv.exe access to the internet?

Please take note that Avast also has a "timeout" setting within the Internet Mail Module under the Advanced tab.

The default is 120 seconds, but that may have changed.

Large files especially pictures can cause timeouts, especially if the internet connection is slow.
Rar files are typically known to cause this problem.

Check the settings in both the email client and Avast Resident module.  Bring them up to max and see if things work out.  If they do, then lower them 60 seconds at a time until you find the setting that works for you.

Good luck.
