As to posts from members with high post counts, the only thing you know from that is that they've made a lot of posts. This may be because they are a long time, deeply involved member of the community whose opinion should be heard and respected, or it may mean that they're a yappy idiot who doesn't know when to shut up. There's no way for a casual observer to know.
Do a little research it might answer your assumption.

There was no forced update, or cutting off of older versions.
Yes, there was a bug in the virus definitions that performed an incorrect internal operation on some machines (nothing dangerous, having no consequences... just something that is wrong). Why it manifested on old versions of avast! only? Starting with avast! 7, we have changed the behavior for specific "errors" - before that, the behavior was the default one implemented by the C compiler - which is "crash". On newer versions of avast!, it simply went on and worked correctly.

The updated virus definitions fix the problem. However, to install such updated definitions on an affected machine, the vpsupd.exe tool needs to be used.
(Another option might be to go into the Control Panel / Add/Remove Programs, select avast! Antivirus --> Change/Remove and use the Update option - but that updates the program to the latest version as well, not just the virus definitions.)

We are really sorry for the troubles...

Thanks to 'M_W' and 'igor'. I downloaded 'vpsupd.exe', ran it, (had to reboot) and Voila!!  All is fixed... even my speaker volume control is back in my taskbar (strange that it was affected as well). I had bunches of those 'unpxxxxxxx' files that igor wanted us to look for. Probably because I tried to do a repair through control panel.

Even though I'm on an older vers of avast, I still like it and can't update to the newer versions. Every so often avast has a hiccup, but all in all it's pretty reliable.

Thanks to all.

Very strange. I've been through rogue updates before, and usually the very FIRST thing that happens is a big, starred sticky at the top of the page. I went and looked.....nothing.
So, we need to drag through specific threads to find a specific post on how to correct something that should have been addressed with an immediate, critical, re-update so the users of Avast out there who do NOT frequent this forum aren't tearing their hair out?

If that's how it works, I'll go uninstall now, and be done with it.
Thanks, folks.

I don't think this is all avast fault, I have a feeling this has to do with the windows update last night. I came across this thread when searching around.

 Bad Windows Update 4/10/2013??
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprogeneral/thread/245c2696-59cb-4a05-94fe-ff763867f677

I saw where they we're talking about kaspersky having the same problem pretty much as avast right now. It just seems to me that it might end up being caused by the windows update.

Has anyone been able to get system restore to work? I've tried but it always ends in being unable to restore back to before this problem.

Yeah, using vpsupd.exe seems fixing the problem, thanks! Also good to know that older versions support is not dropped.
By the way, I've also noticed later before fixing the issue that some other symptoms were: no sound, and overall windows startup prolonged. I wonder how did avast have the influence on other system parts?

Don't think it had anything to do with Window's update.  I haven't done one of those in  about two years. Still on SP-2 as my hardware won't support some of the KBs in SP-3.

I noticed that Windows start was real slow too.  Took at least 7 or 8 mins to get all the services to start... except avast service.

I've had avast update its virus definitions since the 'vpsupd.exe' ran and all is still fine.

I seriously dont understand what in the world is wrong with you...this issue on older versions just popped up now and no one over here knew how to fix it and that's why there was so much of confusion and now once the fix is found then people who make a new topic over here about this will just be directly linked to the solution that was given in another topic.

I dont see the reason to stay on the old version and keep complaining about things that are non-existant with the latest version. That is just plainly stupid if you cant update to latest version and avoid the issues that may strictly arise with the old versions only then you cant blaim avast.I have all my clients running avast v8 without any problems and Avast is always been really reliable and not junky at all to me.Again,if you dont care to explain adequately your issues or what system specs, which avast version you use or anything we cant help you people out here as with over 180 million user base it is impossible to do so and everyone may have a different config on their systems which may create different issues.I dont understand why people want come into the forums like a "troll" literally bash avast like nothing and say that they are not going to use it again and rage quit on it.

This is just the facts. In all honesty,I am not trying to offend anyone;s personal opinion and my only point is "why would you use avast v6 when you have v8 out? and then face all these issues that could have plainly been avoided with v8 and this just.."

And to summarize, here is the solution to all your problems:

This wasn't directed to me, but I will give a bit of light on some sentences.

I am a software developer, so I considered myself an advance computer user/technician.

I was stuck with v6.0.14xx, why?

I though newer versions has a *spy* things?, Nah, I didn't thinks that, that is for paranoid ppl.

So, why?.

First I though every time that AVAST say "there is a new version UPGRADE NOW!", I watched the announce for some seconds (4 up to 7 seconds, and that is the average attention that an user will give to the announce), and IT was seen/though like AVAST is asking me to UPGRADE to A PRO/PAYED version, ohhh shit another spam from avast.

So I didn't know that there was V7 and V8 for FREE too at all, because the announce FAILs in BE CLEAR on first look (and also in a deeper look).

So, in my Developer's notebook I was stuck with v6 thinking that I was on the LAST, HIGH TECH, UPGRADE , UPDATED PROTECTION for FREE.

Every time AVAST sentme a popup it fails to transmit the message.

So, maybe all of you are genious in about computer programming/security, but failed AND A LOT in MARKETING / ANNOUNCES, taking care about human factors.

So, don't asks Why the hell some % of our users base, are still using v6 or v7 when we already asked a lot to move for v8!, here IS THE ANSWER!

Is real that a software company want more SELLS and profits, but also is real that a given big % of the users base wan't or can't pay, so they will ALWAYs be on the FREE licence, and if the announce fails in about comunicate that BASIC thing, all that % sill STAY on purpose on they own current old version (old version for you, but current last version for they).

You maybe can thinks, But we have a huge website, or ADs everywhere, but all you must understand, IF the Antivirus says "you are protected", It works!, no one will BROWSE your website AGAIN, and all ADs on internet just are ignored, only accidental click falls on ads :P

@flyguille,
Do you now feel better after all that ranting ???
None of which has anything to do with reasons for updating or, the problem which has already been addressed and fixed.

No!, that is the exact reason why I was using v6, I already fixed it in v6 YESTERDAY, then I upgraded it to v8 YESTERDAY.

So, TODAY, I dedicated a bit of time writing a message, trying to help AVAST ppl, just as a feedback (that in any company real & arbitrary feedback is quite precious).

But if you read carefuly it only aims as a feedback saying "change those announces" with more clear message to impact users in those 4 to 7 seconds that they will give up before closing it.

Add me to the list of people that experienced this yesterday (same 6 version as others). Thinking I had a virus/malware  that had somehow affected avast, I removed avast through add/remove programs, downloaded a different resident AV while I tried to figure out what was going on, did some scans with various other programs.  I don't like the new one as well, so need to decide whether to install the latest avast version, reinstall the avast version I had before using the fix that's been posted here (I keep all exe installation downloads, so that might work), or go with something else. Avast has been great in the past for me, though, so I'd love to stick with it.

I had other issues, like the sound, as well, which is why I originally thought it was a virus or malware that had gotten through and went down that path first. Would be interesting to know how the problem some of us were having with avast could have affected things like sound and programs opening VERY slowly. (I'm always SO curious about stuff...LOL!)

Bonjour,
