Going back to 4.5 version
« on: March 18, 2005, 05:11:16 PM »
I have had various problems with 4.6 version.  I have 2 internet mail providers somehow.  I have tried repairing, does not work.  So now I am going to uninstall.

My question is can I install the 4.5 version (which worked ok)
will it change to 4.6 version automatically  when I reboot.

The 4.5 version worked well for me. In the 4.6 version the first thing I had to do was stop the webshield in order to get on the internet.  I am a senior citizen who does not want much just to sent some emails and play some games once in a while

This is very odd.  Avast just can't "hook you up" to a mail provider.  Removing the unwanted provider is not difficult.  You do this via your email client (Outlook, Express, Pegasus, Thunderbird etc) in the options menu.
Yes, 4.6 sems to have some bugs, but they are being worked on.  It is not a good idea to go backwards.  I myself have disabled the Web Shield for now which eliminated most of my internet problems.  The rest of the new 4.6 works fine.

Yes you can.  Uninstall 4.6 and install 4.5.

NO.   Go into the Settings and uncheck the box to Auto update the program.  You can leave the auto vps update checked.  You will get an occasional message box telling you that a newer version is available.

;D  So am I! and look at me!  I spend hours here helping people.  The internet has so much more to offer than email and games.  The WORLD is out there at the touch of a "mouse"   :D

I would recommend that you remove the unwanted provider, disable the Web Shield and try 4.6 for awhile.

Good luck.

You and many others like you on the forums, but should you not be able to do that in safety. Web Shield is a major step forward intercepting potential infection at source before it gets on your computer (when it can become much more difficult to remove). The hassle and time wasted in removing adware/spyware/malware, etc. really isn't worth reducing your protection.

We are prepared to help you get the full benefit and protection of avast 4.6, would you like to help us?

It is well known that the user can't go back to previous version, i.e., Alwil does not store previous version in the website for further download.
If you have the old installer, so check the program update to 'Manual'.
But, as was already said, it's not a good idea stopping updating the software...  :-\

From one Senior to another:
In this case, progress is a good thing. ;D
avast! 4.6 has many improvements over 4.5 and it would be a mistake to change back.

I agree that going back to 4.5 seems strange, but avast 4.6 has given me so many problems, I am afraid to uninstall what I have to get rid of the 2 internet mail providers and then reinstall it.  The first thing that is going to happen with the 4.6 is I am not going to be able to get in the internet without stopping the web shield provider.

One of you say I can reinstall the 4.5 but then Techical says I cant.  I have been to avast website and they list 4.5

Anyway to go back to the web shield provider I have added ashwebsv.exe and ashmaisv.exe to my firewall permits.

You say not to get rid of the webshield.  What else can I do to make it 4.6 work correctly and allow me in my email (hotmail) and the internet.

I like avast and was very happy with it up until this update in February I think it was

It's not avast! that's keeping you from accessing the internet. If you allow
all parts of avast! access thru your firewall, you wouln't have any problems.

One of you say I can reinstall the 4.5 but then Techical says I cant.

I do not say that. You can if you uninstall and have the old setup file with you (saved in your disk).
I said you can't download it now. I doubt that avast website list 4.5  ::)

You say not to get rid of the webshield.  What else can I do to make it 4.6 work correctly and allow me in my email (hotmail) and the internet.

I see no relation between emails and WebShield.
The 'problem' could be Hotmail. But why don't we troubleshoot it?
Can you post your pop3/smtp server address, ports that you're using to connect, which program you're using.
Do you have any other email account besides Hotmail? You can send the details by IM (without the passwords of course) if you want.

trouble,

If you download from Avast site, it is version 4.6
I believe that you saw 4.5 which was for the server version.

It is always a good idea to KEEP the original download of programs somewhere just in case.

I still think that it would be better if you work with us to solve your problem/s.
Like I said.....disable Web Shield and let 4.6 run as it remains until we can come up with a fix for your trouble.
This way, when it gets fixed, all you need to do is enable the Shield again.

The Web Shield is a great protection feature.  As far as obtaining a copy of 4.5 from Alwil.....I doubt it.  They kind of frown on going backwards.   :-\

Ok I have version 4.6.623.  I am running it with out the webshield  Everything is fine except like I have said in a previous topic  I still have 2 internet mail shields.  I dont know how I did it.   It did not fix with the repair.

So should I uninstall what I have (that should get rid of the 2 internet mail shields)  reinstall and than just disable the web shield  so I can get in the internet and my hotmail.

It is my outlook express that is not being tested by avast

I dont know what the webshield would have to do with hotmail either but I can live without hotmail. but the webshield would not let me into the internet

Before the 4.6 version everything worked fine

More than likely, there is a file corruption.

Yes, this is the best way to go about it since the Repair did not work.

so I can get in the internet and my hotmail.
Once you reinstall, and disable the web shield, you should be able to access the internet, and thus....Hotmail.

Go into your Account settings in OE and make sure that the POP and SMTP server are properly configured as per the Help instructions for manual configuration.  If you are running W98, then you need to use the Mail Protection Wizard.  NT, 2000, ME and Xp no longer use it.  Avast configures your email automatically on install.

If the system runs ok without web shield, let me know and we can go into it further to see what can be done.

Good luck

trouble,

Once you have everything running as it should be, re-enable the Web shield as I said and see it things stay ok.

As Bob said, Web shield does not normally cause such a problem, but sometimes other files conflict for no apparent reason, and we need to fix it.
