Slow computer......
« on: March 21, 2005, 03:06:36 PM »
Is anyone having the same trouble as myself?
I noticed my pc keeps on running extreemly slowly and after trying lots of other things, i turned my avast off completely.  The pc runs perfect without it..  Does anyone have the same and if so, how do we resolve it?  I have been happy with avast for a long time now and dont want to have to go back to my old one...I am also new today on here, so if i am in the wrong place etc.. im sorry  :(

Hi, welcome to the forums.
What OS are you using? is it up to date?
What avast! version and VPS file (virus database) number, e.g. 0436-4 (see about avast!)

This forum will be fine for now as you/we haven't established that it is a problem related to avast!

There can be many reasons why your computer runs slow and accumulation of program running in the background using system resources and adware/spyware slowing things down.

It would be best to use a program called hijackthis it lists everything that is running on your computer.

Download HijackThis.zip and check out the HiJackThis Tutorial, then post the contents of your log file here. If you need more help just ask.

Try a repair of avast! antivirus. Start--> Control Panel --> Add/Remove Programs.

This is an extract from Eddy's log file analyser. putting a tick in the fix box of hijackthis will remove the entry from the register so it won't run. A back-up is usually taken by hijackthis so you can restore any item you feel needs to be restored.

You should urgently look at the info below about a firewall.

No software firewall detected. If you are not using a hardware firewall, it is highly recommended to install one.

GENERAL INFORMATION :

Yes, in fact that is why I came to this forum looking for solutions. I'm using a dell p4,512ddr and Windows XP, SP1. My default browser is FireFox except when I am forced to use IE. I have tried several different remedies but nothing has worked except to disable Avast. Every thing goes back to normal. This hanging up (slowingdown or crashing) started about a week or so ago after a large update from Avast. Help!!!! ???

P.S. I have run a virus scan with avast and grisoft, adaware, spybot and have detected NO problems. I also use SpywareBlaster all the time and routinely dump the cache in FireFox and clean the disk once aweek all this is while using a dial up connection. ::)

Are you using AVG and avast at the same computer, at the same time (residents)?

negative, I use Avast while online. And when I check my computer I run Avast and AVG on seperate scans at seperate times.

So, you do not use the Standard Shield of avast! Only other providers while you're online. Ok.
I'm using XP and Firefox without trouble  ::)

Angie,, thanks for the reply but I'm missing something. I go to control panel, add or remove programs and I have looked everywhere for something that says "repair". All I can do is change it or remove it. what am I missing? Windows XP, SP 1
