I’ll pile on!  Have had this problem during the past two days also.
Running Win 7, 64 bit, IE9.

It's real easy to get Avast to detect the threat – simply go to the PayPal website – you don’t even have to log in. Avast pops-up with “TROJAN HORSE BLOCKED”, reporting that it blocked the threat when the file was created or modified.

The infected files are always located in the ‘Temporary Internet Files\Low\Content.IE5’ folder. It looks like  the files are named either, ‘webscr[n].htm’ or ‘paypal_com[1].htm’.

I would’ve submitted a file report, but can’t as it looks like I need to browse to the subject file yet that’s tough to do when the file isn’t there. I have no problem getting to the specific folder directed by Avast. But the file isn’t where Avast says it is. So, when the pop-up reports that the Trojan Horse was “blocked when the file was created or modified”, does that mean that Avast actually blocked the file’s creation? Or did it remove it?

I got an email from PayPal telling me that the problem was definitely NOT on their end. They blame Avast. So the notion presented a couple posts before this one, that its strictly an IE problem is interesting. If it is, then I guess we’re at the mercy of any one at Microsoft who cares enough to be aware of this problem. Though a post a couple pages back in this thread reports having the same problem on a Mac. I wonder if that’s actually the case.

Anyway, the big question is: Despite the warnings, is it safe to do business on PayPal?

I wish Avast (I know I keep mis-writing their name) would chime-in with their perspective. I guess we should be asking the same of Microsoft, but their customer interface is so rigid, hierarchal, and cold, I’m not sure I want to invest the time to go there. It may be an Avast issue afterall, and that might very well be MS's entire answer.

Hello.
I try open paypal on two other pc. Win 7 ie9. Same problem. I think that can't be all three pc infected. Point is on ie->avast->paypal. This must be fake report or ifected site on paypal.

Go to Folder Options in Control Panel, click on the View tab, and see if you have Show Hidden Folders checked.

Also uncheck Hide Protected System Files.

I have the same problem. Called avast and they tried to fix it with a remote access, but nothing. I tried on three computer and got the same warning. I have a computer That I run Google Chrome on, I could get into my Paypal account without the warning. I run Widows IE7. So it is between avast and Windows IE.

This isn't the case. I've got some old Paypal webpages saved on my PC that have had this threat detected only since yesterday and they are on a different drive. Somewhere in this thread, someone else also stated they had the same alert as I got ie. old Paypal webpages suddenly becoming flagged as infected. As I've said in my previous post, I haven't gone onto Paypal's site but only did a scan on my system which alerted me to this threat. I strongly suspect a False Positive and an Avast issue as years old files that haven't been touched are suddenly suspect and my searches on this Trojan only links it to Avast and no other Anti virus programs. If it is a False Positive will Avast confirm this? Either that or the Trojan's been around for years and not been detected until now!

Hi ali ! I picked up this virus last night , don't know if it's anything to do with the virus but since getting it I've been blocked form getting into my email account, had to set up a new one and change emails with ebay and started to do the same with paypal it still keeps telling me that the threat has been blocked and sent to the vault  :(

OK this is the last time I am going to play this darn game with AVAST.  I have been trying to post to all that if you remove AVAST, re-install it, and then immediately go to the Settings and check "manual" updates and downloads that the problem goes away!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

FIX YOUR PROBLEM AVAST - it is in the latest version - hope they are having to work overtime.  I will use my Apple for financial issues until AVAST gets it cleaned up!

Heck I have been around computers since 1966 and understand more about updates and how files can get corrupted.  Idiots

I just updated Avast engine and virus definitions and it worked. Apparently Avast finally got their problem solved.

Confirmed...  after "moving to chest" the existing suspected files, I got an updated avast version come down the line (2nd one today). Installed it and can now go into paypal without any trojan threats reported.

Would have been nice though, if AVAST had posted something here letting us know they were working on it.
