Blue Screen and DPC Watchdog Violation
« on: May 04, 2013, 05:33:04 PM »
Hello everyone,

I have a problem with a new laptop and would be grateful for advice.

Its a HP Pavilion g6, running Windows 8 64-bit OS with 6GB RAM and 1TB herd disk memory.  The processor is an Intel Core i5 3210M @ 2.50GHz.

I have it just 3 months, and it has been running fine until two days ago.  Now I get the blue screen and reboot every 30 minutes or so. The blue screen tells me to look up the following fault code:  DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION.  I have googled it but every reference is different - e.g. for some its a bad driver, for others a bad hard disk, others a bad software install etc.

I have the latest version of avast installed (8.0.1483.0), plus MBAM.  I have run these as well as CCleaner and Defraggler and everything seems normal.  I have no unusual or specialist programmes installed.

Can anyone help?  Maybe this is a case for essex boy...? ;)

Thanks everyone.

Thanks for this.  Seems to be another issue then... I have set avast to update the programme automoatically, but it didn't do so.

Anyway, I have updated avast and run a scan (no problems detected), and also run scans using MBAM, OTL and aswMBR -  the resulting .txt files are attached.

If the same BSOD happens with the latest build, please check for the most recent minidump files in C:\Windows\Minidump folder - I believe some of our developers would be interested.
(The automatic update is spread into a longer period to lower the load on our severs, so it's normal that it doesn't update right away.)

Thanks guys.

I found the most recent dump file, but I can't post it here or read it because its a .dmp file.
Can you advise?  This constant blue-screening is so frustrating!!

Thanks mate,
Isn't pastebin just for Copy & Paste commands for text or code?  I can't see how to upload a file....

Maybe I could email it?

You can open ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming in Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer), wait for it to connect and then drag&drop the dump file onto the lower pane.

Btw, do you have any virtualization software installed?

Thanks igor,
I have placed the file in the folder ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming as suggested.  Sorry I'm not up to speed with all of this... what do I do next?

I don't have any virtualization software installed.

I too have this issue. Normally I wouldn't bring about such an old topic, but it seems we both need help on the same issue and No-one else has had it (or at least, the search bar would have one believe that).

Apologies that this post is resurrecting the dead, but I want to provide an update for anyone else who has this problem and finds themselves on this forum page.

After a reinstall of the OS, the issue of frequent, random BSOD went away, but the system crashes again if I have an active device connected to either of two out of the three USB ports on the laptop. By "active" I mean a hardware device that runs software through those ports (I'm sure there's another, correct term...!)

For example, I use a mobile broadband device to access the internet (a Huawei HiLink E3131 modem), and if its in either of those 2 ports the system crashes within about 10 minutes;  similarly, a smartphone connected to the PC through that port and syncing with the PC will also cause the BSOD before very long.  But a USB memory stick used to swap / save files has no impact.  The third USB port is fine with the smartphone and modem - I think that port is USB 3.0, and the others are both USB 2.0.

So perhaps there is a driver issue with those two USB 2.0 ports, or perhaps any attempt to send large volumes of information through those ports eventually pickles the system... or maybe something else to do with the ports is buggered.  Anyway, my work around for now is to just not use those two ports if I can help it.  Which is a pest, but seems to prevent the crashes and isn't the end of the world.

If anyone knows what might be going on, I'd be happy to hear!
