Web Shield choking speed
« on: May 06, 2013, 05:05:05 PM »
I only recently upgraded my internet from a 32K to a 100K connection. Despite the upgrade I did not get downloadrates better than 32 MBps via http, which was weird because downloading via ftp using an ftp client gave me a full 100 MBps. I then discovered that, once I turned the avast! Web Shield completely off, my hhtp speeds were rising to 100 MBps as they should. I assume the Web Shield can't handle these speeds, so right now that is the bottleneck in my setup. I really like avast! and would like to keep on using it, but with flaws like that I'm better off with something else.
What I'm wondering is, is that really avast! being too slow, or are there any settings or tweaks I might have missed?

You can exclude URLs from being scanned.

Well that doesn't help me at all. I don't feel like adding a URL everytime I want to download something from a new website.

Well the web shield shouldn't have any impact if what you are downloading it considered infected or the site itself is considered infected.

I have a 40Mbps broadband subscription and checking on speedtest.net shows a download speed in the order of 37Mbps, which is close to my maximum. Just checked mine whilst doing this.

What would be a more realistic test would be to download a large file (something like XP SP3 download that is about 316MB) and the time taken for that.

Speedtests get full speed with Web Shield of, only about 25-32 with it being on, downloads of any kind didn't get more than 32 with Webshield.

Well for me, the web shield is delaying the page load with 1-2 sec. At download speed I don't feel any impact.

The avast team have said that with connection/download speeds of up to 100Mbps the web shield should be able to cope without slowing the download as such. So there has to be something else in the mix.

How long have you had avast ?
What were the connection speeds like on the old 32Mbps subscription ?

The only other thing that I can think of that may be an issue is if the system spec CPU and RAM might be the next bottleneck ?

I've been using avast for like 4 years plus, I have had my 32MBit connection for the last 1.5 years and always had full 32MBit. CPU/RAM are defintely not the problem (ii5-3750@4.2, 16GB DDR3-1600). I have been toggling a couple of different settings, but it always came down to the web shield.
