But there is mention of my server address being 127.0.0.1
This confirms what Vojtech was asking really that the Mail Protection Wizard has been run and it have modified the server settings so it can theoretically check you email.

My server requires authentication is NOT ticked.
If this is how it should be then OK, some ISPs smtp email servers do require authentication, but that shouldn't stop the email being received being scanned.

Perhaps it is time for more drastic measures?

1. Run the Mail protection Wizard and remove protection. This should set your email accounts back to as they should be.

2. Check that your email is working correctly according to your ISPs approved settings and you can send and receive email.

3. Ensure that the Outlook/Exchange provider/plug-in is Terminated. Reboot.

4. Ensure that OE is not running, Ensure that the Internet Mail provider is enabled. Run the Mail protection Wizard again.

Technical / DavidR,

First an apology:

My earlier post should have read 'But there is NO mention of my server address being 127.0.0.1'

Sorry, if I have caused confusion.

I have printed Technical's suggestions and will read through them to see what he advises.
If I am still having problems, I shall take DavidR's more 'drastic' approach.

Thanks all
Barry

Technical,

Before I make any changes, can I confirm what you are saying.

Assuming I see the following when I open the servers tab in my Outlook Express account properties:

Incoming Mail (POP3): pop.xxx.net
Outgoing Mail (SMTP): smtp.xxx.net

Account name: firstname.lastname

My e-mail address would be firstname.lastname@xxx.net

You are suggesting that I change those settings to:

Incoming Mail (POP3): 127.0.0.1
Outgoing Mail (SMTP): 127.0.0.1

Account name: pop.xxx.net#firstname.lastname

Is this correct??
Where do I put the SMTP part?

Regards
Barry

Try the points below first and hopefully that will save a manual update of your accounts.

That means you are not protected by the Internet Mail provider - In win98 in order for avast to scan your emails befre they end up in your inbox it needs to modify your mail settings.

Try running the Mail Protection Wizard again
- Ensure that OE is closed, not running.
- Ensure MS Outlook is closed (belt and braces, ensure and MS office apps are closed, just in case there is any possibility Outlook may be detected).

Then check and see if your email account settings have been changed.

Incoming Mail (POP3): 127.0.0.1
Outgoing Mail (SMTP): 127.0.0.1
Is this correct??

Fully correct  :)

Only that account name should be: firstname.lastname#pop.xxx.net

Where do I put the SMTP part?

Outgoing Mail (SMTP): 127.0.0.1
Check for SMTP Authentication
On the details of SMTP authentication, add:

Account name: firstname.lastname#smtp.xxx.net
and your password.
If it does not work, test: firstname.lastname@xxx.net#smtp.xxx.net

But, avast can do this automatically!  8)  Try your original settings into Outlook Express account properties:

Incoming Mail (POP3): pop.xxx.net
Outgoing Mail (SMTP): smtp.xxx.net
Account name: firstname.lastname
e-mail address: firstname.lastname@xxx.net

CLOSE OUTLOOK EXPRESS
Run Mail Protection Wizard from Start Menu > avast! antivirus
Choose other email programs than Outlook/Exchange and set the automatically configuration...
Everything will be automatic changed for you  :)

Technical, you reversed the format of usernames, it should be USER#SERVER.

barryfs, start the Mail Protection Wizard and select manual setup. Will it find and show your accounts ?

DavidR,

I tried doing what you suggested in an earlier post:

- Using the mail protection wizard, remove protection.
- Terminate the Outlook/Exchange provider.
- Reboot.
- Re-run the mail protection wizard, with OE NOT running, and the Internet Mail provider enabled.
- Unfortunately, I still have the same problem.

I have a question about the mail protection wizard though.
It displayed 2 windows:

- The first had 3 radio buttons, I selected 'Automatically protect all my accounts'.
- The second was called 'Service Settings' and listed my default servers.
This contained my current SMTP and POP3 server names in the format
  smtp.ispname.net and pop.ispname.net.
  I left these unchanged.
Should I have changed them to 127.0.0.1?

No, it is correct to leave them as they were, this is just showing which account will be your default account (if you have more than one you can select which should be the default {much the same as in OE, one account is the default}).

The Mail Protection Wizard should make any changes as required, check when it completes to ensure it did.

DavidR,

That's just the point.
I ran the mail protection wizard, with OE down, I left the default POP3 and SMTP servers as they were, expecting the wizard to make all the necessary changes for me, and I told the wizard to go ahead and do it's stuff.
It then told me that it was complete, and I was now protected.

However, it does not seem to have changed my default servers to 127.0.0.1 !!

I must confess I am very confused.

Barry

I can't understand why it doesn't change the email account server details to 127.0.0.1, it should do it automatically. If it does it change the server details to 127.0.0.1 then I doubt that it is changing the username either.

You may have to set it up manually using the suggested format in previous posts by Technical and vojtech.

Thanks DavidR,

I won't get a chance to change it tonight, but will post a reply when I have done what Technical and vojtech recommended, to notify you if it is working as it should.

Many thanks for all your help
Barry

Hi to all! Your interesting debate remember me a question I ask to myself for many times: I use IncrediMail; I see the Avast! Mail Scan running icon when I use pop/smtp protocols... but isn't the same when I open or send hotmail, msn or other web based accounts supported by this funny and good program. Can someone say me something about? ::)
Thanks all who reply to me and thanks to all who read this post. (special thanks to all Evangelists: you're really our indispensable support team! ;D

Whilst this is off-topic for this thread.

Hotmail is not the same as pop3 email it used the http protocol, you use your browser to view emails and that will be checked by the web shield (prior to viewing) and standard shield when it is in your browsers cache, but not by the Internet Mail provider.

Thanks for your fast reply  :)!
Yes I understand this, but I ask because Avast! is so a rich software... and maybe it have this function and I don't knew it. In your opinion, it's possible to address webbased mails through the Mail Scan Control using my preferred mailer?
