latest update today

Just updated avast automatically and two things have changed:
1.   The desktop shortcut is missing
2.   Avast is now highlighted white in 'Start - All programs'

Is this normal or has something nasty happened to my computer?
If it is normal now, does this serve any purpose other than to make me think something is wrong?

Hello Susan and welcome to this webboard.

It looks like something went wrong during the update.
What? We probably will never know.
It could have been a little power dip, a hickup in the connection and many more things.
So let's try to solve it.

First try to initiate a manual update.
Right click the avast ball in the tray en choose update program.

If that doesn't solve it, try a repair.
start > control panel > software > avast > add/remove (choose repair)

Let us know if one these things solved the problem.

Thank you for that.
I did as you suggested, the manual update and repair, and now have the desktop shortcut. A power dip would be highly likely in this area.
However, Avast is still highlighted in Start - All Programs.
As it doesn't serve any logical purpose to have it highlighted I get nervous in case something has gone wrong. I can live with it if it's something that has been included with the latest update.
I have scanned with Avast, Malwarebytes and Superantispyware and nothing was found.
Thank you very much for your help.

Update:
I just learnt something: Start menu options for 'highlight recently installed programs' was checked. I don't know what update or installation did that but I've now undone it.
