Found a Win32:Malware-Gen
« on: May 17, 2013, 12:14:23 PM »
Did a scan last night and Avast found a file named 'iefav2603.txt' and a identified it as a Win32:Malware-Gen. Now that it is quarantined, I was wondering whether it would've infected my 64-bit Windows 7 OS and or whether I should delete it as soon as possible.

- You have done the right thing, 'first do no harm' don't delete, send virus to the chest and investigate.
Deletion isn't really a good first option (you have none left), 'first do no harm' don't delete, send virus to the chest (a protected area) and investigate.

There is no rush to delete anything from the chest, a protected area where it can do no harm. Anything that you send to the chest you should leave there for a few weeks. If after that time you have suffered no adverse effects from moving these to the chest, scan them again (inside the chest) and if they are still detected as viruses, delete them.

Where was this file originally located, e.g. (C:\windows\system32\infected-file-name.xxx) ?

OK, unlikely to be a problem having removed it from that location, leave in the chest as suggested.

Monitor your system for any unusual symptoms or other avast alerts. If so get back to the topic and we can get you to run some other analysis tools.
