Avast message in incoming and outgoing mails
« on: April 30, 2013, 05:57:56 PM »
Hello everyone,

I'm running Windows 8-64 bit with Avast 8.0.1483

Can you tell me how to appear respectively on the incoming and outgoing mails
  • clean incoming message
  • clean outgoing message
as I could do before.

I can not find the option in the settings.

Thank you all.

Peter.

That feature has been removed from avast for some time now, there is a way of getting it back by modifying one of the ini file settings but I'm not sure myself, DavidR will probably know the answer to this one.

The 'Insert Note into Clean Message' Option removed - This option is greatly depreciated in that it is easy to fake and these fake 'email scanned by XXXX (insert AV of choice) and found to be clean have been used in malicious emails in the past and who trusts that anyway, I certainly don't.

Why is it needed when if an inbound email is infected avast will alert, brand the email Subject and remove any infected attachment, etc. For outbound email it too would alert if infected/suspicious, etc. the only real benefit is promotion of avast. Who trusts it if the message is from other AVs, so why would they trust it is from avast!.

It really doesn't bring anything additional in the way of security, potentially the reverse as opening an email could actually initiate a remote attack. So looking inside an email for a clean note could potentially put you at more risk, it certainly isn't something I would rely on.

As an avast user (who previously used the outbound clean note to promote avast) I believe that the above comments are why avast! took the decision to end this option. Not to mention that in some email clients (Incredimail I believe) this option wasn't completely compatible.

If this is something you absolutely must have then you will have to do it manually:
-  You can do it by modifying the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AVAST Software\Avast\EmailShield.ini (XP location) or C:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Avast\EmailShield.ini (Vista, Win7). Note these folders may be hidden.

Find these values InsertNoteCleanMsgIn=0 and InsertNoteCleanMsgOut=0, InsertNoteInfectedMsgIn=0 now change the =0 to =1 (you only need to do that for the ones that you want to have the Note inserted). Now save the changes, the avast! Self-Defence Module will ask for confirmation, answer Yes.

I know they can be faked, but my wife is in a program that REQUIRES these certification messages or their email scanner will reject them. I tried editing the ini file (Avast 8, Thunderbird, Win8), but it did nothing.

If this is removed, I can use it, but I'll stick with the free version, but I'll have to buy something else for my wife's computer. I was going to buy one of the 3-computer licenses, but this feature has to be there.

AVG does have it, but it doesn't work with Thunderbird. I set up a separate user account using Windows Mail just to send these messages. And AVG does not integrate well with Thunderbird.

Anyway, the instructions I've seen here don't seem to work with the latest Avast

Just to let you know, because I need the outgoing certification, you lost a 3-user purchase. I'm still using the free version on another system, but I had to stick with AVG to get the outgoing email certification message.

There is nothing to stop you using the avast5.ini mod (in my Reply #2 above) if it is that important to you.

The email headers do have the clean info for sent & received email.
Example for a sent message.

X-Antivirus: avast! (VPS 130520-1, 21/05/2013), Outbound message
X-Antivirus-Status: Clean

Not exactly what DavidR has shown how to do (what you wanted).
But the message is there in the header already and an email scanner should be able to find it and use it.
