Why do I recieve error 10013? (WinXP)
« on: May 03, 2005, 11:10:11 AM »
When I start up, I generally recieve 3-5 alerts from Avast which tells me that SMTP, POP and/or NNTP won't be protected.

Why is this?

My mail client is Mozilla Thunderbird.

I have browsed the forums to search for answers, but the topics that mentioned this error didn't explain it so that I could understand.

I may be a conflict with another program (firewall, some security application ?).

Not easily, e.g. by disabling a suspected program and restarting avast Internet Mail resident provider.
BTW. does the error occur also when you restart the provider, or only after restart of computer ?

The problem appears randomly.
That is, today when I started the computer, it didn't show up.
Yesterday it did, and tomorrow, or the day after that, it will again. (I usually only start the computer once every day and then I keep it running)

But it appears after login, not at boot.

Next time I get the error-messages, I'll restart the provider and see if I get the same messages again.

Could it have anything to do with the fact that I once used Outlook Express, but I don't anymore?
Or should I dive right at my firewall and try to disable that? (I'd rather not do that...)

VojTech, isn't this the same trouble of Annie?
Why are we seing some 'conflicts' with Internet Mail Provider?
I've never seen this warnings, ever...

Dacovale, into the firewall settings, the following programs should be allowed to connect:

ashServ.exe (avast! antivirus service)
ashWebSv.exe (avast! Web Scanner) (allow server rights)
ashMaiSv.exe (avast! e-Mail Scanner Service) (allow email rights)
ashUpdSv.exe (avast! Update Service)
avast.setup (avast! Update executable)

The only two that has ever asked my ZA(free)-firewall for access was

avast.setup
ashMaiSv.exe (I don't have any options to give a program e-mail access explicitly)

I added the other three and gave all complete internet access.
Lets see if this solves things.  :)

The problem could be ashWebSv.exe (avast! Web Scanner) (allow server rights).
Do you use a local proxy? Like an anonimyzer application for instance?

no, the only thing between me and pure internet is my firewall. (and Avast of course, since it scans everything I download)

ashWebSv.exe hasn't ever asked me for any internet rights whatsoever.
I know, because I keep a log of those requests.

It does have complete access now though.

EDIT:

For some reason the web scanner wasn't running.
I started it, got the warning message about ZA, and discarded the warning.
Since I use the free version of ZA, I can't use that funtion, nor do I want to.
