Your commercial engineering tricking the average mum and dad computer user into downloading your commercial version is a viral tactic.

A lot of my clients are asking me why they have been tricked into downloading Avast Pro, when all they were trying to do was re-register for free

That was a bug and has been fixed meanwhile.

I'm a very small IT guy in a small country, but when my clients tell me something or complain, I listen to them, and they are complaining now.

Have you ever heard the saying "You don't get a second chance to make a good first impression" ?

Frankly, Avast should apologize.  I don't think they ever officially acknowledged there was ever a problem.
Certainly, it's not even mentioned in the intro to the new version:

Now my clients are asking me to remove Avast.

This is what you get when you use free AV software.  It might be a culture shock to some that a commercial firm is trying to incentivise its non-paying users to add to its revenue stream.  That's called being in business.  I have never found Avast to behave improperly.  I believe that the purpose of the free AV is to create goodwill and help promote the safety of personal home users on the Internet while being subsidised by business customers.

I certainly would not take umbrage against you gerrynz who has simply introduced your clients to the best free AV software available.  I can think of no better AV.  I have used it since version 4 and it has served me well.  To switch to an alternative would be cutting off your nose to spite your face (as we say in the UK).

The obvious alternative in terms of popularity is actually a less effective resource hogging inelegant elephant of a thing.

I have as well.
But I can't justify charging my clients (mainly mum and dad users) for the problems they are having with Avast which now exceed viral/ malware problems.
