Vik

Check-disk finished, and did a reboot.
I've just rescanned the problem folder. 6549 files, no viruses, and no error messages!!!!!

All seems fine now. Thanks.

Forget my off topic questions re the system restore points on my G: drive. I didn't realise it was automatically switched on, on all drives. I've sorted it now. :)

There will be one for each different partition/drive, to all intents and purposes if you need System Restore at all.

I use Drive Image as my restore options, there are other options, I would say that you only really need it on the windows partition/drive.

You will save huge chunks of drive space if you disable it for drive G:

SYSTEM RESTORE - Info - Troubleshooting
There are many, many reasons why a System Restore may fail. For example, see "Why are previous restore points not working?" in the "Troubleshooting" section of this official Microsoft page:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/plan/faqsrwxp.mspx

There's lots more on that page that's worth reading too. Note especially the sections on "Does System Restore protect personal data files?" (the short answer: no); "What should I do if System Restore does not work?"; "Why are my restore points missing or deleted?"; "Why does the System Restore Wizard lockup?"; and so on. Just a few minutes on that page ought to convince just about anyone that System Restore is not intended for heavy-duty system protection!

Thanks for the links. I'll have a read. :)
I am aware there are issues with it, but so far it has come in helpful on many occasions. I do backup all my data regularly as well.
Cheers

Can anybody from Alwil take a look into http://www.v1ru5help.org/smf/index.php?topic=93.0;topicseen ?

An anonymous researcher has reported through several sources that anti-virus products from six vendors fail to detect malware when it is contained in a corrupted Zip file.

The modification to the Zip file prevents the anti-virus programs from detecting files in it, but it doesn't prevent users from accessing those files, according to an advisory from Internet security research firm iDefense. The vulnerable products are from McAfee Inc., Computer Associates International Inc., Kaspersky Labs, Sophos plc., Eset Software and RAV, according to the advisory.

The problem has to do with the products' handling of an error condition in Zip files, which store information about compressed files stored within them in two locations. There is a local header preceding each file in the archive and a global header at the end of the archive. When the uncompressed size of the file within both archives is set to zero, the affected programs fail to detect malware in the files.

Here is the entire article link.

Thanks...

As mentioned in another thread, last night I had over 350 files come up with this error. Should I send some of them to you guys or something? This was in spite of a recent scandisk on one of the affected hard drives.

mixer.exe is a part of the drivers for the C-Media onboard sound systems. It provides the user with a replacement for the default Windows Volume Mixer.

mciavi.drv is the AVI video driver.

I believe the number is different - the files were probably not scanned "due to program settings". It just means that for the selected scan sensitivity (quick / standard), MP3 files are not scanned because they are not dangerous.

Hi,  New to board. This comes up with every scan.  I'm using Avast Home 4.5.  C:\Windows\$NtUninstallQ282010$\msrepL40.dll  error 42003....gets to this file and locks usually.  I scanned this morning and scan actually finished but still showed this same error.  This was after I uninstalled Avast and redownloaded due to freeze when trying to open the error icon.  It would lock.  The other buttons worked just not the error. Works now. I don't know what to do to fix this error 42003.  I did have Win32:magistr in prior scans (not this last one) and did some fixes and hopefully I got rid of it ;)  Problems also with C:\Windows\MF_C421.lfa, 420 and 425. Not sure if I saw the 42003 but somethings not right. Can't even touch any of these files without a complete lock up and a manual boot.

1. try the new avast version (4.6) - does that make any difference?
2. are you saying that if you try to access any of the files e.g. in Explorer (or Notepad or whatever), your system freezes? :o
If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving's not for you.

Vlk, is it necessary that this thread remains as a 'stick' one? I always see it at the top of the forum but reading the first page it seems that the archive scanning was already improved/solved, etc.
Well, just my 0.02  8)

Hey VLK,

For the novice - does that include files with the error code "Error occured during file deletion"  I just did my very first scan with the home edition and I had 44 lines of the "error on deletion" and therefore, the files are still floating around my computer.

If anyone else could offer assistance, I would be grateful.

Hi HELPDEB,
Welcome to the forum.
Please help us help you.
What version of Avast! are you using
What vps version?
What OS?
What exactly is the error message? (If you are getting one.)
The path and filename is of great help.
etc. etc.
The more info you supply, the easier it is for us to solve your problem.

Since your problem has nothing to do with the Subject of this post, may I suggest
that you start a new subject and ask your question in there.
Don't forget to supply us as much information as possible.
Thanks
