I would like avast! to be the best anti-virus program available.  My concern is that adding anti-spam protection would really turn avast! into a resource hog.

Right now, just having the desktop up on my computer, avast! is using 20,000K of memory and this is with two providers terminated -- messenger and outlook.  Norton NAV 2003 uses around 7,000K of memory under similar conditions and AVG-6 Free uses 1,800K of memory.

I would prefer to see avast! allow users to completely turn off components that they don't need -- or -- better yet -- be given options during installation.

I would vote no. Like others mentioned, keep avast dedicated to virusses.

by the way ,vlk why don't give us the possibility to don't upload in memory the providers

so u could do a antispam in avast
so we can decide which provider load...

basically more of the undocumented avast.ini options, or even the provider "hacks" should be included in the GUI under some advanced button
 ;)

I agree with whocares...
The file avast4.ini must be documented and, more, a GUI interface is needed...

Maybe avast! is coming to be a Norton SystemWorks  :'(

Please nooooooooooo . If you give antispam capabilities to Avast Antivirus, what will be the next step? A webfiltering module? I don't want an "all in one" software I just need an antivirus solution.

Please, don't make Avast a resource hog with an installer of more than 10 Mb

Regards, Lito.

No Anti-Spam module
And no firewall module while we are on the subject.

The reason why I left PC-Cillin was because it had so many things going on at once that it crashed my PC often.

I agree with someone above.
Good AV with excellent resident shield + email scanner. I think that it is enough, because resident shield is capable catch it without email plugin too.
Please not personal firewall.
Good AV = avast! and good firewall I can have Kerio for example.

FWIW,

I'm on the NO bandwagon as well.

I personally use Avast! -> K9 Anti-Spam ->Zone Alarm Pro

plus I occaisionally run SpyBot S&D and for the first time today TDS-3 (Trojan Detection System). I also use Google Toolbar for popup blocking (much better than ZA Pro's implementation).

With this configuration (while it is a bit quirky), I have the option of changing out any item in the chain without affecting the effectiveness of the others.

I personally would like Alwil to concentrate on improving the transparency of POP-3 and SMTP support (e.g. ZA's scanner and NAV's scanner). And improve detection of Trojans that may come in through P2P and other ports (e.g. RingZero stuff).  I like (Technical...I think) would like enhanced documentation of the .ini files, and improvements in the help files.

Further, like many I feel that introducing this feature (unless via user configurable plug-in) runs the risk of bloating this magnificent program.  Not to mention complicating it.

just my $.02.
