Yahoo Mail - Stopped in it's tracks
« on: April 09, 2005, 04:55:41 PM »
I have Avast Home 4.6.623.  As soon as it was installed I could no longer get into my yahoo mail account.  I tried playing with the Internet Mail setttings as well as the Web Shield settings with no luck.  The only way to get into my mail account is to disable On-Access protection.
My OS is Win XP Home
My Internet connection is DSL through SBC!Yahoo
I have ZoneAlarm 5.5.062.011

There has to be a way to have access to my mail and still have On-Access protection!

Check out this FAQ page on the avast web site http://www.avast.com/eng/webshield_issues.html

Also, ZA needs to allow access ashWebSv.exe (Web Shield). Unless you are paying for the pop3 service of Yahoo, Yahoo mail is web based (http) and is viewed using your browser and as such is protected by Web Shield and Standard Shield when it gets to your browser cache.

What error messages are you getting?

Here is the whole message:

Your login session has expired.
Why does my session expire?
Login sessions expire for two reasons.

For your security, your Yahoo! Mail session expires a maximum of twenty-four hours after you have logged in. If you have chosen in your Yahoo! User Information (found be visiting "My Account" next to the Yahoo! Mail logo at the top of this page) to be prompted for a password more frequently than every day, your session will expire after the specified amount of time.
If you do not accept the cookies set on login or your computer is not configured to accept cookies, your session will expire almost immediately. We use cookies (small pieces of site information) to assist us in user authentication and in saving configuration information. Cookies are required for Yahoo! Mail.
If you see this message immediately after logging in, you should check the following:

Check to see that your computer system time is accurate. Cookies are time sensitive and may not work if your computer date is incorrect by a large amount.
Make sure that your browser is configured to accept cookies or that you agree to accept cookies during the login process.
Turn off any third party programs or control panels that automatically reject cookies.
Re-login to Yahoo! Mail

Does your logon page start at an https: (secure) page, or does it start at a normal http page and then switch to validate your input?

If so there have been similar comments relating to Hotmail with firefox and web shield enabled, where the page hangs between pages, this could/may cause a time-out message?

You may want to try the pre-release version (beta) of avast, see this thread - http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=12320.0

Same thing happened to me.  I have to shut off "Web Shield" to fix it.  Just reducing its setting to "normal", doesn't work.

But, I also had a secondary symptom - I could not SEND email via Outlook Express.  Receive, yes.  Send, no.

Where did this Web Shield thing come from?  I don't remember anything by that name before, and only noticed it yesterday while trying to track down the problem.

On my system, Avast runs alongside Zone Alarm, and Pest Patrol.  Never had a problem until this "Web Shield" thing got installed.
