stij.exe trojan/malware
« on: June 11, 2013, 02:16:35 PM »
Has anyone else heard of or been hit by this particular trojan/malware what ever it is? If so how did you deal with it? It managed to slip passed the free Avast!

My laptop has been attacked by it and is now totally unusable. The only thing I can access is the Task Manager and as I seem to have lost control as administrator over the machine I cannot stop anything and neither can I do a System Restore.  Even the free version of Avast didn't see it coming. It started when a window popping up with the name 'Perion' in it asking to be allowed to install to which I clicked no but it still installed and I couldn't stop it. I later found this stij file in the Task Manager and each time I removed it the file reloaded itself.

I am taking it to a technician who has advised that at the worst case I will have to have the machine's operating system totally cleaned out and reloaded.

stij.exe is digitally signed by Perion Network Ltd. and it's not trojan/malware but PUP, maybe adware at worst.

There's no need to reload your system, simply use AdwCleaner.

there may be additional files to remove, so attach all logs requested by Asyn and a removal expert will check

Thank you for the offer to help but my computer tech is actually my nephew who runs his own very successful computer business. He succeeded in ridding my laptop of the stij.exe and removed the sweetim program which is where the stij was hiding. All without having to do a reformat of the system, thank goodness.

You're welcome. (Well, as he's your nephew the removal was also free.)

I found this on my computer as well. I ended up purchasing Spy Hunter. It cost $70, but it found over 1400 registry errors and was able to get rid of the virus. My computer is working great now.
