Problems with Oulook Express under Avast 4.0
« on: April 12, 2005, 10:20:00 PM »
I need some help to solve the following problem:

I used to use AVG and I changed my anti-virus to Avast 4.0, which pleases me best.

But I am having a problem: when I open my Outlook Express, the values for the Pop3 and Smpt servers are changed to the value 127.0.0.1. Could Avast server responsible for that bug?

I would appreciate any help from this forum members.

Thanks,

Regina Machado

Hello Regina,

It not a bug. Avast always configures your pop3/smtp setting to 127.0.0.1 wich is the IP address of your local machine. It creates it to be able to proccess any incoming/outgoing email... Its like a mini email server that he create to do his job.

Some programs do that... Sometimes its used to test your "placa de rede" ( I forgot how to say it in english... Netcard maybe?)"

Thanks for your time,

Elminster

Regina, could you receive and send emails?
Are they scanned?
I think this is correct if you have Windows 98.
Avast should change the providers to scan the emails.
See http://forum.avast.com/index.php?action=display;board=2;threadid=7913;start=0#msg64228

With Win98 SE you should have:

pop3 server= smtp server = 127.0.0.1
username = mail.server.coml#user or mail.server.com#user@server.com
smtp authentication enabled and the username there = mail.server.coml#user or mail.server.com#user@server.com

It's normal. Enjoy avast! Brasil!  8)

I thank you, and others who answered me, for explaining the matter.
Nevertheless, Outlook Express (6.0) does not run anymore after that, asking me all the time to confirm my password.
Is there any way for me to stop it? My system is Window 98.

Thanks once again,

Regina Machado

Hello again,

If you disable the email scanner and restore the default configuration of your smtp/pop3/login and password, it works fine?

Also you could check out this link, its a faq about the commom problems in email, with possible solutions...

Your advice is for someone using Windows 2000 or XP
For Win98 the 127.0.0.1 settings must be used.
