JavaUpdate (False Alarm)
« on: June 27, 2013, 09:13:35 AM »
Avast! Software Updater says a new version of Java is available. Java Updater via Control Panel says Up-to-date. Umm... under false alarm just like the one for IE10

Ummm... this is interesting!!! I did a uninstall and reinstall of Java and the issue with software updater got fixed. I also saw it from this post http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=128233.0

I am pretty sure my javaupdate didn't work properly.

Same issue with JAVA Updater failing to update in this topic, http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=128233.0. I would offer the same advice, if you don't need JAVA get rid of it.

OK - so here's the problem as I see it.
JRE 7.0.250.16 (64bit) is installed on my machine as the latest version.
Avast software updater tells me that a newer version exists - namely 7.0.250.17
If I update via the "update now" option within the Avast interface it does indeed update to the 7.0.250.17 version - but only the 32 bit version -
which it installs alongside the 64 bit version.
As I am running a 64bit machine then that is the version which I need - and not the 32 bit version.

Postnote to previous not above:

I have two 64  bit laptops (running Windows 7) to which the scenario above applies
in addition to a 32 bit desktop running Vista - which is not looking for an update at all! ... weird!

Actually it depends on what program on your system requires Java, 64 bit systems run 32 and 64 bit software so whatever program you have that needs Java would depend on those factors.

I also agree with DavidR in the post prior to yours that if there is no distinct program on your system that needs java then it's best to uninstall it, and if you do need to have it installed then at least disable it's browser functionality via the  Java control panel.

http://www.java.com/en/download/faq/java_win64bit.xml
All that discusses is what your browser would require, I've yet to see any webpage that I cant view because I don't have/need or use Java.

As I stated that unless you have a specific program on your system that requires Java then it is best to uninstall it as it's a huge security risk.

There is indeed a problem with Java software detection, I installed my 32Bit Java7 to version 25 and it's reported by Avast as .16 with .17 update available. AFAIR I installed Java 7 v25 64Bit new but yet the same versions reported by Avast. I don't know if the Problem is within Avast or whether Oracle issued a newer build shortly after original release of version 25.

How many versions of Java do you have on your system ?  As the java update does not always remove older versions

Secunia's on-line Software Inspector is one site, it uses a JAVA applet to check your system for outdated applications, which I stopped using as I got fed up with JAVA vulnerabilities. I believe there is another on-line antivirus scan that uses JAVA to run the scan rather than using activeX (that requires IE).

So for me they are few and far between and the risk with JAVA far outweighs the benefit of visiting the sites.

Secunia online is the only one I know of that requires Java but that can be solved by installing the downloadable version of Secunia, for me though I don't use either as I've usually installed whatever update before Secunia even recognizes that there is one :) it's helpful to users that don't monitor there outdated software though.

OK ....think I've got it now...... the version of Java required (32 or 64 bit) depends on  whether your browser is 32 or 64 bit and not  your OS ...right?

Used the Avast online updater on all machines and on those machines which still showed "out of date" I updated the software database within the Avast GUI and all now show "up to date" .... with no update required.
