Can anyone suggest a virus and malware free download manager ?

What's wrong with the built in download manager your system has preinstalled

If you have to use something else then you'll find options via a search at FileHippo

Download Managers are a thing of the past. They were the cats meow back in the dial up days but not necessary with today's high speed internet. Also every browser has a build in download manager.

I use Orbit in my previous ISP because downloads that last for more than 5 minutes stop for unknown reasons. I stopped using orbit when I changed my ISP last month.

I also use eagleget for downloading programs in my school. The internet connection in my school is fast but inconsistent. Orbit does not work with my school's proxy but eagleget does.

Back in the day Downloaders such as Download Express Plus were notorious spammers, loading your files with megabytes of spam which would then be served to you personalized to your surfing habits

also very difficult to remove= no one program would find all places and hidden random names

I use Free Download Manager because it automatically sorts my downloads for me, resumes most broken downloads (depending on server), and can be interfaced with Avast to scan downloads (choose which extensions you want scanned). It is completely malware free.
