Bob,

Did you try switching XP to Windows Classic Theme?  Just see it works properly without running XPs Skinning.

That's not helping any either.
At this point, I can't access the about functions at all. All I get is the icon in the Taskbar and no
way to open it.

Sure would be nice if someone from Alwil would make a comment. :( :(

Bob, have you checked the log for errors of applications?

Kamulko!
No errors.
I've done a complete un-install of avast using avast! External Control
rebooted. Did a fresh install and an update and am still having the same problem.
At this point I need some help from Alwil!!!
Thanks

I don't understand why I can't get a simple answer from Alwil:
"We're working on it."
"We don't know what's causing it."
"It's not an avast! problem"
ANY ANSWER WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

Well, it's really strange. I was thinking about it for some time, but I don't see any difference between the About dialog and any other avast! dialogs. Additionally, I don't see any difference between the first opening and the subsequent ones.
So, I have really no idea what might be causing this.

Try to delete the value AboutRect from
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ALWIL Software\Avast\4.0

Thanks for the comeback igor
Unfortunately the reg. change didn't help. still have the same thing the first time I start the about option.
So for right now I just close it and re-open it. The second time it's fine.???

Sorry if this was already suggested or tried.  Change your video drivers to the standard vga drivers and restart.  This type of issue is almost always a problem with the display driver.  Also, update your video drivers.  First from the Microsoft update site and if that doesn't work try the manufacturers site.

Thanks MrRAlan ,
But my video drivers are fully up to date using the manufacturers latest drivers.
Keep in mind that this problem only effects on small part of one program. There aren't any
other display problems.

Bob, did you try just the microsoft generic vga drivers...just to isolate the issue?  Also, is your dpi setting set to normalsize, 96 DPI?

It's not the video driver and my display dpi setting is set to normalsize, 96 DPI.

I seem to have a problem with the "about avast" information window.
Igor, is that a solution for this one?
I was browsing the forum looking for unsolved questions and remember this one... well...
Maybe Bob deserves some research and help from us, the old guys here  :)

What do you think? Only reinstalling...? But I think he already installed avast more than one?
What's up?  ::)

Don't be o sure about video drivers. In the time of S3 Trio 64v+ cards, you could see a lot of abnormal things going on on screen just because of the drivers. Please, install XP generic drivers or downgrade your drivers and try again.

As stated before, it's not the video driver.
