They are working on it but, as 8.1 is a beta version it may take a little while to get it right

Didn't you create an image backup before you installed Windows 8.1 which is actually a beta version ???

I also have the same problem. A real bummer. I'm even considering switching to AVG while avast! work on the issue.

Have fun. It isn't compatible with Windows 8.1 and you may not find any way of getting help for their product.

I'm in the same boat. I actually made the recovery USB key like they recommended and when I tried to go back I couldn't. I'm still running 8.1 and I like it but Windows Defender isn't my first AV choice.

What you should have created was an image backup prior to installing Win 8.1 unfortunately for you that's now hindsight and not very helpful.

I tried the beta for 8.1 and well, it marked my program files as a malicious folder somehow and after that, got bombarded by a ton of memory access and werfault errors (DLLHost, Taskhost) to which I ended up with a black screen. The mouse was working (it was effectively if explorer.exe crashed except task manager would not load to let me execute it) and after rebooting, instantly blocked them all again on logging on and back to square one.

So, tried system restore and well, got blocked by it with that as well but! Safe Mode finally prevailed and I was able to remove it.

(If you need to get there, Shift+F8 (hold shift and spam F8 as per usual) to trigger the recovery mode then "See Advanced repair options" button followed by the "Troubleshoot button" then "Advanced Start-up options" then "Reset now" and the good old advanced boot option menu will pop up while booting (Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, Safe Mode with Prompt, Disable Signature Enforcement etc)

Its not actually avast thats the issue here, its what windows 8.1 did on the upgrade, the best thing would of been to uninstall all antivirus programs and revert to windows defender while upgrading, I recon the process got confused as it was looking for windows defender and not 3rd party software to be migrated over.

I am using the first avast for 8.1 I saw posted in the forums 8.0.1492, and the only problem was a pop up while installing about it being compatible with windows. But it has been working ok except showing no files scanned for script shield. But I thought I would try this new one you have posted but it usually take me 2 or 3 minutes to download and this time it shows like 18 minutes and a second try 8 minutes, way to long, so I canceled the download thinking something was wrong. Just wanted to let you know of a possible problem, will try again later. slybo

@Vlk,
Much better. Thanks.
2 problems.
1. The final selects to stay with the free version is not working. (Not Selectable)
2. VPS updates not working - Server error (not available) (Bulk download not compatible with this version.)
