I believe the problem may be McAfee, as that is renowned for messing with the networking

Download the McAfee removal tool from here http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe

From control panel uninstall McAfee
After the reboot run the removal tool

Does the network now function ?

Essexboy: I uninstalled McAfee from the control panel. I tried 3 times to run the removal tool (restarting each time) but failed. It says "the process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process". Each time I restart, it tells me that programs (such as Skype) have stopped working and I have to click to agree to stop each one. I think these are programs that are set to open on startup.

And the screen before that said" Incomplete uninstallation: Error obtaining full permissions for cleanup"

Could you try from safe mode ?  If that fails run an OTL scan and I will remove it manually

Same result in safe mode.
Run just the OTL scan? In safe mode? ...and then attach it?

Safe or normal mode is no difference to OTL :)

OK not a lot left there, lets now reset the network connections.  After the reboot from this can you let me know what error if any you get when you try to connect

Warning This fix is only relevant for this system and no other, using on another computer may cause problems

Be advised that when the fix commences it will shut down all running processes and you may lose the desktop and icons, they will return on reboot

Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

Code: [Select]
:Commands
[CREATERESTOREPOINT]

:OTL
[2011/04/14 14:01:38 | 000,024,376 | ---- | M] (McAfee, Inc.) -- C:\Program Files\mozilla firefox\components\Scriptff.dll
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {27B4851A-3207-45A2-B947-BE8AFE6163AB} - No CLSID value found.
@Alternate Data Stream - 160 bytes -> C:\Users\Carolyn\Documents\Jacksonville Convention receipts p1.JPG:3or4kl4x13tuuug3Byamue2s4b

:Files
netsh winsock reset /c
ipconfig /flushdns /c
ipconfig /release /c
ipconfig /renew /c
netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt /c
netsh advfirewall reset /c

:Commands
[resethosts]
[emptytemp]
[Reboot]
  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
  • Post the fix log that pops up on reboot.

Not good news, I think: OTL "stopped responding". I got a Microsoft message that OTL has stopped working, and a prompt to close the program. I have not clicked to close program yet. The desktop looks blank, as you predicted. What now??

That may be MBAM blocking it..  Is it stuck on killing processes at the bottom ?

If so rerun the OTL fix from safe mode where MBAM is not active

I don't know. I see empty temp and reboot on the custom scan screen. should I go head and try again in safe mode?

ok. So it seemed to be doing something for about 2 seconds. How do I know it's done?

nvm...after a few minutes a blue line started running across the bottom...

Essexboy, I am beyond impressed and thankful. I am online.

My Avast says it updated. Should I take further precautions? I am replacing the computer very soon, so not interested in a big investment, but also don't want to go thru this again! Do you think I had a virus or malware?

Could you now confirm that windows updates is working and you are happy with the performance.  I believe it was a corruption within the DNS
