Hi wyrmrider,

Why you choose something of someone who is rather critical about avast 8 Free AV,
as we can read here: http://www.davescomputertips.com/avast-8-free-av-a-step-in-the-wrong-direction/
By the way the check was presented to us in another context, before Jim Hillier launched his rant,

Because it was the feature in today's PCTOOLS newsletter thus getting renewed wide attention
Notice that Avast was  featured with color blocking the first test
perhaps we should have a sticky about implementing PUPS detection
and other simple mechanisms to cover the remaining tests
the tests are not going to go away
best defense is a good offense

Hi wyrmrider,

Good to know that.
As there is renewed attention to the issue, a heads-up on this is important.
You could have revived the previous topic also.
I just wanted you to know Jim Hillier's critique of avast's 8 free...nothing that you can help..

Yes users should enable all features of avast to be all-round protected.
It is good that avast does not have all enabled by default as some users for instance do not want PUP detection.
But I always think it is better to leave all that intact and make an exclusion or inclusion rather.
If you are an advanced user, you may tweak the solution to your personal likes,
but then you have to make a decision on the risks involved.
For me for instance the avast shield protection is a vital component, and that stays on
even if that means missing scan results even via a proxy. So be it!

I ran all 5 tests and Avast Blocked 4 and one failed some other way
something to be proud of
I do have PUP turned on in several blockers
Is PUP patrol really the function of an AV
no matter PUP's are frequent conduits for bad stuff
would they have blocked the torrent that the grandkids downloaded?

Hi wyrmrider,

PUP control or riskware control should really be checked by av, because if the PUP install was not performed by yourself intentionally but through a third party, it could be a royal way into your computer for attacker and co to bring his non-PUP friends along. I would rather also that av would detect crapware that can only be uninstalled via official malware removal and not by the average user.
Your grandkid's torrent could have been blocked by the av sandbox, as the kiddies did not turn that feature off.
You have told them that P2P-ing comes with certain risks and granddad and the kids had an open discussion there I hope.

Pol
crashed again last night
I have not allowed flash to load
see if it makes a difference

recvd the following pm
"Please refrain from posting in the virus and worms section, this is a restricted area for scripting analysts and malware experts plus it's interrupting in the help given."

If I interfered with any of your posts please let me know
AFIK v&w is not as restricted as the fellow poster states
after all you post there :)
I usually wait till any helper involved is finished
I do see a lack of clean up and prevention..
