Hi Folks-
Instead of creating new topic I "replied" to my own topic with the logs. It may not have made it to the thread. Thought I'd try again. As said in earlier thread, A couple of messages a day JS:Decode-AHP(Trj) is blocked by avast.  Process:   C:\Program Files\MSN\Service\wlcommsvc.exe

It has been suggested to update my Java which I've confirmed was already the latest- Java 7 Update 25. I assume that means all of my security patches are also updated. (am I wrong?)
I don't know if the Wlcommsve.exe(windows live messenger) should be deleted, turned off or left alone.
Is is possible that I have no infection but an obvious vulnerability which something is trying to invade?

Your thoughts on my logs and next course of action are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Windows live messenger is now defunct, MS has killed it in favour of Skype

The logs look clean now are you experiencing any problems ?

Warning This fix is only relevant for this system and no other, using on another computer may cause problems

Be advised that when the fix commences it will shut down all running processes and you may lose the desktop and icons, they will return on reboot

Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

Code: [Select]
:Commands
[CREATERESTOREPOINT]

:OTL
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {3E7C8B5A-96AB-438F-BF9B-782400655440} - No CLSID value found.
O3 - HKU\S-1-5-21-1531440668-513292944-2101247418-1002\..\Toolbar\WebBrowser: (no name) - {2318C2B1-4965-11D4-9B18-009027A5CD4F} - No CLSID value found.

:Commands
[resethosts]
[emptytemp]
[Reboot]
  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
  • Open OTL again and click the Quick Scan button. Post the log it produces in your next reply.

Thanks for responding Essex. Actually, I only applied a fix(or delete) in Adwcleaner's case. I didn't hit the fix on the other programs I ran yet. I guess you are telling me I should go ahead and do that. I probably am not totally clear as last night I got another message saying that a threat from JS Decode AHP was thwarted. Clearly something is trying to wreak havoc. I will run those suggested programs again and this time apply the fixes.

Thanks for your response. By the way any thoughts on doing anything with Java or Wlcommsve.exe?(the process associated with the attempted attack) Was your comment about it being obsolete a suggestion to delete the whole Windows Messenger program from my system?

Thanks mon!

Aye remove windows messenger, and running the OTL fix will clear the java cache and empty your temp folders

Do you need Java ?

Difficult to say as you need Java, you could disable it except for when you need to run the Java programme.  If you do not need Java to run in IE then see here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2751647

Much obliged Essex. Last question.
I can certainly do without Java in Internet explorer. But significance is there to deleting or disabling it in Internet explorer but keeping it running on Mozilla/chrome?

As far as I am aware Chrome has its own Java set up and FF uses the main Java applet.  The IE block should only stop it in IE, but on the same page as I linked to is a fixit to revert the changes if it does cause problems :)

: Keep Java Updated :

WARNING: Java is the #1 exploited program at this time. The Department of Homeland Security recommends that computer users disable Java
See this article and this article.
I would recommend that you completely uninstall Java unless you need it to run an important software.
In that instance I would recommend that you disable Java in your browsers until you need it for that software and then enable it. (See How to diasble Java in your web browser and How to unplug Java from the browser)

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes:

Malwarebytes.

Download and install FileHippo update checker and run it monthly it will show you which programmes on your system need updating and give a download link

If you use on-line banking then as an added layer of protection install Trusteer Rapport
