Another XP stalling at aswRvrt.sys problem
« on: November 28, 2013, 05:31:30 PM »
Hi

Seem to have hit the same problem as everybody else - on two different computers within two weeks of each other  >:(
First time round, I didn't find these boards and ended up bringing a planned HW and SW upgrade forward by updating processor and motherboard, installing Win 7 on to a new internal HD and plugging in old HD as external USB drive so I could access the files.

This time round it's my daughter's laptop and we're not planning to upgrade the HW if we can avoid it.

Laptop running XP SP3 and Avast set to update automatically. Got no idea what happened - left laptop on while out and came back to find it frozen. Tried reboot and it hangs at aswRvrt.sys every time.

I've followed the instructions at http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=130459.0, and have attached the resulting FRST.txt file.

What next please?

ATTENTION: Software hive is missing.

ATTENTION: Software hive is not loaded.
There is a problem with the MFT

How did you produce the FRST log ?  Was it via OTLPE disc

If so from the OTLPE desktop select command prompt and type in the following command :

chkdsk c: /r

On completion then retry a normal boot

 ;D

Thank you thank you thank you

It worked. Rebooted a treat and my daughter snatched the mouse off me as soon as her desktop came up.

Any idea what caused it? And/or what I need to do to avoid any of our other machines going down with the same symptoms?

thanks again

At a guess I would assume that the system froze whilst it was saving something in the registry and then when you rebooted it corrupted it
Check disc resets that if it finds an error in that part of the boot sequence

Glad it worked
