Not sure but we can check, although changing access controls can cause weird problems

Download OTL  to your Desktop
Secondary link
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.

  • Select All Users
  • Under the Custom Scan box paste this in
netsvcs
BASESERVICES
%SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
/md5start
services.*
explorer.exe
winlogon.exe
Userinit.exe
svchost.exe
/md5stop
dir "%systemdrive%\*" /S /A:L /C
CREATERESTOREPOINT

  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
    • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
    • Post  both logs

Just got an alert saying Avast definitions had been automatically updated. That's new...

My computer is still behaving very strangely though. Avast still takes a long time to respond to any commands.

Could you disable spybot teatimer and see if that makes a difference

Can't find teatimer anywhere on my computer. Maybe it didn't come with this version. Wouldn't uninstalling Spybot get rid of teatimer anyway?

So I've tried that. Makes no difference.

It seems to be some kind of virus that is affecting my system pretty deep.  :(

I can see no indication of malware in the logs that you posted.  It may be worth using a programme to set windows to default settings with regards to access and ownership

Download  Windows Repair (all in one)  from this site

Install the programme then run

Go to step 3 and allow it to run SFC

On the start repairs tab click start

Select the following  items and tick restart system when finished

    • Reset registry permissions
    • Reset file permissions
    • Restore Important windows services
    • Set windows services to default[/b]

OK I tried that. Avast is still crashing.

The only thing that's changed is that now the desktop shortcuts have a padlock symbol to accompany their lack of logo.

I don't have a CD, no. But I tried to repair the system from the Advanced Boot Menu when I was having the aswrvrt.sys error, and it didn't work.

Maybe it will be different now I've ran a virus scan and reinstalled Avast?

Oh also, I tried to error check the C: drive before any of these problems really started, when the computer was sometimes freezing on startup, but would always boot in the end if I kept trying. I thought it might be an error so I error checked, but then near the end of the check it said something like, 'Insufficient disk space to fix errors' even though I quite a lot of free space on the disk. It kept repeating this message in DOS and I had to power off. That was when the system stopped starting and I got the aswrvrt.sys error. Maybe that was the start. But anyway, should I maybe try to error check again? Why do you think it told me I didn't have enough space? I had 90GB or so at that time.

Sorry to ask so much of you. I really appreciate all this time you're taking to assist me.

To me that sounds like an HDD error

What hard drive is on your system ?  I will see if I can locate a diagnostic for it

    It passed the quick test.

I guess the results are irrelevant if it passes, no?

Shall I run a full test?
