windows 7 stuck at "starting windows" screen
« on: August 05, 2013, 03:08:25 PM »
today when i switched on my pc it got stuck at "starting windows" screen. i tried to boot it in safe mode it got stuck at "aswrvrt.sys" file.

I inserted windows 7 cd and through command prompt tried to run sfc / scannow but it said "system repair is pending". I also tried windows system repair it said "windows cant repair this pc". My windows is win 7 ultimate 64 bit service pack 1, my laptop acer aspire 5738 and i have avast free antivirus installed on my laptop.

things tried till now:-->
safe boot

debugging mode

sfc /scannow

chkdsk /r

windows system repair

system restore

hiren boot cd

avg rescue cd

avast rescue cd

last known good configuration

and guys one thing more i would like to share that i regularly update my windows 7, and my antivirus and after every 20 days i scan my pc with antivirus, i hae my firewall enabled i also dont frequently visit any software downloading websites, so chances of my pc encoutering any virus, malwre, trojan etc. are remote....help me guys.....plzzzzzz........

Essexboy notified...He will help you out soon. Please have patience there are thousands of people here who need help.We are all volunteers and avast users trying to give quality help for free  8)

Avast has a huge user base of about 185+ million users so you know the conditions we face here.  ;D

Make some ice tea by that time and calm your nerves down, everything will be fine.Even if you have safe browsing habits there are chances of contracting some nasty piece of malware because no AV is 100% as everyday 10000+ viruses come out

Thanks!

Is this a 32 or 64 bit system..  Also prior to the non-booting did you install any updates at all or install a new programme ?

Download the following three programmes to your desktop :

1.  Rufus

For 64bit systems
2.  Windows 7 64bit RC
3.  Farbar Recovery Scan Tool x64

For 32bit systems
2.  Windows 7 RC
3.  Farbar Recovery Scan Tool

Insert the USB stick Then run Rufus

Select the ISO file on the desktop via the ISO icon.

Press Start Burn

Then copy FRST to the same USB

Insert the USB into the sick computer and start the computer.  First ensuring that the system is set to boot from USB
Note: If you are not sure how to do that follow the instructions Here

When you reboot you will  see this.
 Click repair my computer

Select your operating system

Select Command prompt

At the command prompt type the following  :

notepad and press Enter
The notepad opens. Under File menu select Open
Select "Computer" and find your flash drive letter and close the notepad.
In the command window type e:\frst64.exe and press Enter
Note: Replace letter e with the drive letter of your flash drive.
The tool will start to run.
When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.

Press Scan button.
It will make a log (FRST.txt) on the flash drive. Please copy and paste it to your reply.

With this type of error there is no guarantee that it can be cured...  As a side not the Avast file was the last one to load successfully so whatever should have loaded after that failed

I think I have found the problem, the image path is missing for two Avast drivers
Quote
S4 aswRvrt; No ImagePath
S4 aswVmm; No ImagePath

I will uninstall the Avast drivers under control set 1
You will probably need to repair Avast once you are back up and running
I also see Comodo running as well is it just the firewall or do you have HIPS enabled as well

Download the attached fixlist.txt to the same USB as FRST
Run FRST as before and press FIX
On completion reboot to normal windows

Have you turned off system restore ?

From the recovery menu could you try Startup repair and if that fails try system restore

There is a way as detailed here http://windowsxp.mvps.org/spuninst.htm use the date created to remove the latest.  There are no longer any active Avast drivers on the system
