Threat of imminent hard disc failure - please help
« on: August 18, 2013, 07:29:33 PM »
My computer was shut down and when I switched it back on a screen came up telling me that there was an imminent hard drive failure. I'd really appreciate any help, I have no clue what to do...  ???

Hi,

Before we continue I would like you to test your HDD. For that, you will need an empty CD and to burn tool on CD and to boot from MHDD. Here is download link for MHDD tool and guide how to run it:

Download MHDD utility from here:
 MHDD download link

Unpack and burn as ISO ...
Add and boot MHDD from disk ( in the same way as Live CD )

  • When you load the file select option 1
  • When the menu appears, select the disk that you'll scan

    Type in:
Code: [Select]
scan
    ...and hit enter

  • In the next menu, click F4
  • It will begin HDD scanning, let him to finish scan.

>> If there is more than 3 inputs in the district UNC X then your hard disk is damaged.

Sorry, lost you at
"Unpack and burn as ISO ...
Add and boot MHDD from disk ( in the same way as Live CD )"

All I get back from the CD is a notepad file that says

"Please boot from this CD!"

You need to use windows "burn image" options or to use some third party software to burn ISO.
You may use Free ISO Burner.
http://www.freeisoburner.com/

MHDD will be downloaded as image file. You need to burn that image file on disk as bootable disk. Job will do tool above.

How to boot from CD? In BIOS you need to set "First Boot Device" to be your CD/DVD ROM device, not Hard Disk.

Ok, when you download MHDD and unpack the file (mhdd32ver4.6.iso) from arhive, you will get image file or ISO file ( mhdd32ver4.6.iso ).
You may use google for detail instructions or YouTube. Use sintax of words:  "how to burn iso"

Why did I write all this for running MHDD tool instead of going to malware removal?
Because I believe that malware is not responsible for this harddisk behavior that you described.

Are you able to test HDD with MHDD tool? If you are not, do the test.

Or invite someone who have a little better knowledge for a computer, buy him a beer or juice or bring a good chick ( ;D) and follow MHDD the instructions for testing.
You will not know for sure is your HDD damaged or not without test.
