Hi!

I have a Asus U36SD-RX366V which has been unable to boot the last week. I cant recover or repair using any of the typical windows tools and cant access using safe mode.
It stops at aswRvrt.sys which seems to have haapend to other users to.
I needed to recover some data quickly so I took my cpu apart and put the harddrive in an enclosure and was able to access it. However I only got access to one partition, D:.
Now I would like to recover the computer as well if possible and am wondering if I should try to, in some way, uninstall avast on the harddrive using the enclosure? Or assemble the cpu again to boot using USB?

It seems Essexboy has been very helpful on similar issues before:    http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=131070.0

Waiting to see if I should assemble or not.

As you cannot access the drive from another computer that would suggest an MFT failure or something similar as in that state any problem with Avast would still allow you to see the C partition
Can you run a chkdisc from the recovery console on the affected system ?

Hi!

Want to just say that I am a bit of a noob. I know my way aroudncomputers but have never done anything like this before. Not sure how to run chkdsk.. Would that be easier to do using the enclosure or after assembling the cpu again?
I ran a few tests on the disk using seagate seatools and found no errors excpet for the short DST test ( which failed to run... Did not tell me why, just that it failed.
I have not yet tried any advanced tests.
The secondary system I am using to acces the drive is a ASUS eee 901 and it has a simplified verison (stock)  of WP on it. The faulty system is Windows 7.

I attached an image of my current setup to make everything clear. Assembling the U36SD is quite tedious and I had no luck accessing safe mode previously.
Can I run Checkdisk on the drive using the enclosure?
Also note, both partitions show up in My Computer as E: and F: , however I cant access F: .  When I double click and try to open it just loads (windows time glass) and after a while is says disk F: is not formated. Do you want to format? And Iguess I do not want to format? :P Would loose all data right?

Note: The F: partition is what to used to be my C:  when the disk was in the U36SD.

Thanks in advance!

As it is reporting not formatted I would suggest that you run chkdsk /r from the recovery console command prompt with the drive back in the original casing

You can create the windows 7 recovery console on a USB if you do not already have it

Yep :)

Download the following two programmes to your desktop :

1.  Rufus

For 64bit systems
2.  Windows 7 64bit RC

For 32bit systems
2.  Windows 7 RC

Insert the USB stick Then run Rufus
Select the ISO file on the desktop via the ISO icon.

Press Start Burn

Insert the USB into the sick computer and start the computer.  First ensuring that the system is set to boot from USB
Note: If you are not sure how to do that follow the instructions Here

Click repair my computer

Select your operating system

Select Command prompt

At the command prompt type the following  :

chkdsk /r

Thank you so much for all your help so far. However now I am stuck :P

Not sure if I did something wrong? To be honest Im not 100% sure the systemm is 64bit  But pretty much 99% sure.

Anyway I went into BIOS and made sure the cpu would always boot from USB after burning the image.
Everything finally seemed to work but I am now at an option I am not sur what to do with.
Attached a picture of options
System Recovery options:

Use recovery tools that can help fix problems... etc

or

Restore your computer using image you created

I cant see a operating system which leads me to load drivers and then I dont know what to do.
It access a bunch of folders in X:Windows\System32
Which one should I choose?

Have not dared to do anything yet.. :P

OK even the recovery console is not detecting the windows folder.  In all probability the MFT or hard drive is history

Oh, ok that sux! But I guess I was expecting that a bit.
But how can the HDD work so well with the enclosure? Was able to save all 300+ GB of Data on the the partition without any problems.
Mostly curious how this stuff works, would love an explanation if you have the time! :) I dropped the whole cpu maybe a year back..

Given that you seem to have more experience than me, is it a good option to try a Hybrid HDD like the momentus XT, if I have to completley replace it?
Would like the speed but also need more capacity, and +500Gb SSD is too expensive..

THANK you so much for your help! Is there anyway to help support you or your cause? :)

Hi again,

I realized I have a few images on my desktop (ie the C: partition of my drive). What would be the best way to try to recover them? Can I run some sort of data recovery software on the drive, using the enclosure?
