creating a bootable CD
« on: September 29, 2003, 04:06:03 PM »
I am also having problems getting a CDROM to boot.

I have created a number of them before for other products, so I am *reasonablly* sure I am using the correct options in my burning SW.

I downloaded the executable and have an evaluation license (received this morning).

I ran the executable, pointed it at the license.dat file and it went successfully.

I next ran the application and did the "update and create an ISO image"

I have an ISO image ~160MB in size and selected this when burning the CD.

On the CD are two files:
  BOOTCAT.BIN     ~2k
  BOOTIMG.BIN     ~156,630k

I know the CD device is bootable (tried it with another disk this morning)

I have tried twice (i.e. created a second ISO and burned it to a second disk) with the same results. On boot sequence, the system appears to read from the CD briefly and then stops and does not proceed any further.

Thoughts?

Thanks,

Jim

Thats wrong. The root of the cd should look like this:

29.09.2003  16:11    <DIR>          DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS
29.09.2003  16:11    <DIR>          I386
29.08.2002  16:00                10 WIN51
29.08.2002  16:00                10 WIN51IP
29.08.2002  16:00                 2 WIN51IP.SP1
25.03.2002  20:54               167 WINBOM.INI

What Burning Software do you use?

The BOOTCAT.BIN seems to contain the bootable image for the cd and the BOOTIMG.BIN seems to be the contant of the CD.  That bin seems to be a kind of isoformat itself.

I used Roxio CD Creator.

It has a menu option for making a bootable CD that then asks if you want to format it as floppy 1.44 or 2.88 MB or not format at all.  I chose "not format at all" (the same thing I believe I have used in the past, but just now I am doubting myself...)

I add only the iso image file to the CD "project" and when it burns, it creates the two BIN files.

Thoughts?

The ISO contains all Data needed. You may try to drag ´n Drop the iso on Roxio, i hope that it knows than what to do with the iso.

OK. I'm a dope... (but then again, Roxio could be more clear...)

I remembered/re-discovered that with Roxio (EZ CD Creator 5), if you have an ISO or other CD image that is already a bootable image, you *do NOT* select "New CD Project -->  bootable CD"...

What you do is: "Record CD from CD image"

Works like a champ now.

Thanks for the help!
