Disabled the avast! Firewall NDIS Filter Driver in my connection

If I disabled the avast! Firewall NDIS Filter Driver in my connection, am I still protected?
Right Clicked my connection > properties > unchecked "avast! Firewall NDIS Filter Driver"
I disabled it because my connection was very slow with it, and when I disabled it, it was at full speed. But am I still protected if I disabled it?

Speaking of the avast! NDIS Firewall Driver - is it supposed to show in "Control Panel" ->"Device Manger" under Network adapters??  Reason I ask is that it used to on my system but doesn't show in Device Manager now.  I do have it listed when I look at the properties of My Connection and the firewall gives every indication that it is working properly.  Just wondering . . .
