found norton antivirus

Avast found evidence that norton antivirus (used to be) installed on my computer, and has disabled some of its (avast) own functions.
How do I convince Avast that Norton and I no longer are in a relationship ?

Unfortunately is a old story. Norton softwares leave in the Registry a lot of unnecessary hidden files. Please, go to the Norton website and search for one of the complete uninstall utilities provided there or search with the internal search engine of this forum.

Thanks, Norton just became more difficult to remove I wonder if they think no one is using NAV2003 now and removed it, or the site has been reorganised, or too many people were downloading it.

I think I see what is happening, if you hover over the link below which is contained within the URL tags you will see that for some reason it puts http:// in front of the ftp address, this appears to screw up the link.
ftp://ftp.symantec.com/misc/consumer/Rnav2003.exe

This link which is not contained in the URL tags and it doesn't put the http:// at the front so this link works ftp://ftp.symantec.com/misc/consumer/Rnav2003.exe So yes the link is working

You know I have only been using this forum for just over a year and I never saw the FTP tag/icon

Perhaps because I rarely use the formal Reply button but tend to use the Quick Reply window with no icons, etc. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it

After reading these posts, I assume that Mcafee does the same thing.  I still have Mcafee running.  Do I need to delete it?  And will it leave traces like Norton?  Or can I delete any registry files that name Mcafee? Having Mcafee running keeps Avast from running and allowing me to add my "Pin" number or registration #?

You would certainly have to uninstall McAfee to get avast to fully install all elements. I not sure if the same problem exists with McAfee (haven't seen much in the forums, try a search for McAfee and see), but NAV is notorious about the debris it leaves behind.

You could also visit their website and see if there any auto removal tools or advice on manual removal. If there are download them or the information, so you have it to hand. Then uninstall it using add remove, reboot and see if you can install avast without problem.

If you experience a problem then you could try the tools/information on manual removal and since you already have this to hand you won't need to go on-line to get it.
